Since April 28, Colombia entered into a national strike catalyzed by new tax reform in the midst of a brutal economic and social crisis exacerbated by the pandemic. The government tried to shift the burden of tax collection back to the middle and lower classes. Parallel to the peaceful protests, there are organized groups of criminals using the protests to incite violence and even attacking other neighborhoods. The police and military forces executed hundreds of violent acts in the demonstrations and peaceful protests that still continue and that leave to date (8.05.2021) according to Human Rights International, 43 assassinations, 105 disappeared, 160 attacks medical missions, 160 detainees, 1330 wounded, and 6 cases of sexual violence. 

While this oppression is at its peak by the police and ESMAD, it is not new. Colombia is a country marked by inequality, corruption, and systematic violence against the people through neoliberal policies, drug trafficking, and elite mass media that manipulate and hide the truth. In a country where education and health are privileges, where opportunities are utopias and the future seems to be canceled, people go out, people march, people are angry, people can't take it anymore. They want justice among the cases of police violence, the possibility to live with dignity (free education, accessible health system) and to live in a society in peace.

Aligned with this feeling, multiple collectives and agents of the Colombian and international culture and scene decided to unite and contribute with our art to help the victims of this oppressive government, to amplify and denounce the police barbarism and to raise our voice and resist through our art. SOS Colombia is a fist up, a cry that today becomes a collective action of musicians and visual artists presented in a compilation of techno and experimental music and also short documentaries that will expose to the world how an extreme right-wing government massacres and silences its people.

"Against the violations of human rights", "In the absence and violence of the state. The people unite and self-manage" and "Dignity, Justice, and Peace" will be the three parts of this compilation that will raise funds to give to several verified human rights organizations and self-managed initiatives that are working with the most affected populations of this crisis, that are holding the statistics of police violence and are supporting the invaluable work of the front lines in Cali, Bogota, Medellin.

Hailing from the Yorkshire Dales just outside of Leeds, Balrog has supplanted himself in the darker and grittier side of industrial techno with a focus on heavy groove-ridden drums, driving bass and obscure distorted vocal. His tracks look back to the classic hard and grooving techno of the early 2000's, but with a fresh injection of modern industrial power.

This young producer has gone from strength to strength over the last few years with multiple releases on exciting techno labels including Soma, Moments In Time, The Meaning Of Rave, COUP, Green Fetish, Taro, and Gobsmacked. These releases and unreleased tracks have received support from some of the biggest in the scene including Amelie Lens, Dax J, Rebekah, Paula Temple, Stephanie Sykes, Manni Dee, Gijensu, Tham, SHDW & Obscure Shape, and many more.

Balrog also runs his own record label, Khazad Records, which releases music from the very best industrial and hard techno talent around.

The heaven of the Blue Demons

How did you fall in love with electronic music? 
Growing up in Belgium was pretty boring, but Belgians have a strong appreciation for electronic and forward-thinking music. From the age of 14 I started going out in search of some thrills, and there my lifelong crush on hard dance music began, via le Gabber and Drum & Bass. 
 
How has the techno scene changed since you first became a part of it?
 All I can remember pre-2014 is being groped and shoved around on dancefloors at anonymous warehouse parties with a minimal-ish techno soundtrack. It was always a traumatic experience in one way or another. It couldn’t be more in contrast to the events which are now (or were, pre-COVID 19) on every weekend. The music is heavier, the people are much more diverse, and mostly free from the predators, so overall it’s a lot more fun.
 
Tell us about your party HTBX London. 
It started with, and is still dedicated to, a closely tied community of like-minded people, who have a very fussy but voracious taste for techno. The party is an excuse for us to congregate once a month, dance until we drop, (wearing very few clothes) and catch up amongst old friends as well as new connections.  
What projects are you focusing on in 2020? I’m trying not to make plans that could be impeded by the unfolding apocalypse. I plan to finish some tracks I’ve been working on and would love to release ASAP. If this situation doesn’t subside soon, I'll explore some new side hustles. 

What is so special about FOLD?
It’s a bada$$ nightclub with incredible sound, visuals, atmosphere, all of my favourite artists have already played there at least once in its short existence, but it’s the exceptional team behind it that makes FOLD irreplicable. I couldn’t have more admiration for what they do, and the way they do it. Their strong values have shaped it into the first club where many people feel comfortable for the first time in for years, if ever. The crowd is enthusiastic but respectful, the line-ups are exquisite and refreshingly inclusive.  

What has been your favourite set at FOLD and why? 
My favourite sets to play and dance to have almost all been at the glorious UNFOLDs on a Sunday afternoon. 

Last November, two topless guys in balaclavas (later identified as Mercury 200) played their Britney Spears remix and the crowd was possessed! One to remember for sure. Last but not least, Voicedrone B2B James Newmarch closing sets always deliver. I miss those.

 
Once the pandemic is over, what is the track you’re most looking forward to playing at the first party back? 
‘Kropp uten Grenser’ (‘Body without Borders’) remixed by DJ Ibon will be played until everyone is sick of it, I snuck it into my mix for today too, around minute 14.
