After their successful collaboration on <3, Atom™ and X1N are back, this time presenting the 4 track EP »0.9«. It contains both the opening and closing tracks of <3 as well as their corresponding mutations. While »0.9 (almost a unit)« was remixed by Esplendor Geométrico, »Almost a unit (0.9)« got reworked by Peter van Hoesen. »Both renditions contribute amplified iterations of inherent attributes of <3« as X1N eloquently states. On a side note it may be mentioned that in mathematics, the expression »0.999..« is considered being identical to 1. Meditating over that very fact may tell you a lot about our current reality.

I made a mix last night, December 31st, NYE, to ritually banish 2020 and finish up my "15 minutes with you" series.

I used records, on a 1985 Bozak CMA 10 2DLS and Technics 1200's which I modded to +/- 12 pitch. The recording is unedited. It got more wobbly the more I drank, so you've been warned!

The title was inspired by one of my favorite philosophers, GB Vico (1668-1744). Like a lot of Enlightenment-era thinkers, he claimed history was organized as a series of stages. What made Vico's theory distinctive was that he stressed how each cycle was human-made, a product of choices, and so, was not necessarily linear, progressive or permanent. It could even fall back on itself in ever-changing ways, like Fibonacci's recursion(ricorso).The USA's recent devolution into what Vico called the "barbarism" stage is just one example. At the end of one trip around the sun, we remember and give thanks and gird ourselves for the challenges ahead.

Reading the above description below almost 2 years later, it's incredible to think that only 5 days later, a mob of angry barbaric white men and women stormed the Capitol building.... one of them in a longhorn/animal pelt/face paint costume for the occasion.

What more about "barbarism" since then? The anti-science agenda has proceeded apace, though Biden as president has done some good things to stem the pandemic. He has promoted middle class stability, and democracy itself, without costing the Democrats deep electoral losses. But Putin has invaded Ukraine, the UK is spiraling downward because the Putin-aligned Tories have gone full blast to destroy democracy there, Italy has elected a far-right leader, and neo-fascism is rising in Germany. The GOP here in the USA clings to white "Christian" ethno-nationalism and is determined to kill the game (democracy) that it cannot win, because, shocker, people under 65 generally hate their policies.

I hope the continuities and disjunctures, the ups and downs, the recurring themes and loops, the moments of terror, desperation, serenity, joy, and energy inspire appreciation of the awe-inspiring wonder of nature, life, and our human place in it.... 

Sic semper.... in the ricorso senza fine of life, change and stasis go back and forth....
