Nomad Discology #006 - James Warburton 

It was challenging to compile this mixtape; whatever I chose, it felt like so many favourites had to be discarded, such is the profound effect that music and sound have had on my life.

We begin with field recordings from my garden outside the studio space where I've created the majority of my music in the last 10 years. The sounds evoke happy childhood memories of being in nature and the countryside with my family.

We travel then through songs and sounds that in someway surprised, inspired and resonated with me growing up, either half-inching albums from my brother's collection or uncovering gems at my local FOPP's wondrous £5 albums section. 

From the pioneering spirit of Radiohead through the world-building sonics of My Bloody Valentine and the relentless artistic curiosity and expression of Bjork. It was these acts along with the live performances I've picked that energised me to try to find like-minded souls to form our own bands and perform music live in my teens and twenties. 

From there the mixtape showcases a developing love of minimalism and experimental works catalysed by Trent and Atticus' soundtrack to 'The Social Network' and the catalogues of Richard D James and Chris Clark; records which opened my eyes to the possibility that music for film didn't have to be large and orchestral, but could be spacious and unusual, potentially created without needing huge budgets for studios and multiple musicians whilst still maintaining that explorative and visceral sprit of the artists I loved growing up.

We penultimately land on Mogwai; a long-term love since I first heard 'Young Team'; inspiring my earliest teenage concréte-style sonic experiments with 4-track tape recorders, immersed in their mastery of atmospheric storytelling and live power. They've repeatedly eviscerated doubt and restored my dwindling musical reserves over the years. 

We end with a field recording of a recent walk through the Oxfordshire countryside, nature regularly provides me the environment to replenish inspiration, blended with a poem my parents introduced me to by Robert Frost, extolling the virtues of being bold enough to take the path less travelled.

Summer rain: our latest mix comes courtesy of San Francisco lifer Jeremy Castillo, a long time fixture of the SF dance music scene. He was a founding member of Club Lonely, a seminal SF institution that he ran with Vin Sol and DJ Primo, and he now runs what is "probably the best wine bar in the world" aka Bar Part Time. Jeremy is also responsible for curating the bar's impeccable bookings and its unmissable mix series and newly launched label Bar Part Time Recordings.

We've been bugging Jeremy to add to the Sharp FM series for years at this point, and we couldn't be happier that he finally found time to deliver a perfect summer mix. Some notes about from Jeremy himself: "[This is] a somber summer rain mix with a bit of off the beaten path synthpop, guitar laden disco, reggae dubs, and stuff played at the wrong speed."

Q1. How and where was the mix recorded? Could you tell us about the idea behind the mix?
This mix was recorded at one of our HAND parties, we recorded it on a Bozak with a 4 band isolator on the master output, no eq per channel…keeping it simple :) we also use some dorrough meters to keep the levels relatively constant.
The idea is to basically capture and hopefully express some of the magic we often experience at Have A Nice Day with the wonderful crowd and vibes. I think there’s something special that will always be felt in a mix if it is recorded at a party with 200 people enjoying themselves and certain freedoms instead of if it's recorded with us alone in a studio or in our living room.

これは僕たちのHANDパーティーでレコーディングされたんだ。シンプルな方がいいからイコライザ―は使わず、Bozakとアイソレーター４つをマスターアウトに、レベルを出来るだけ一定に保つためにdorrough meterを使って録音したよ。
ミックスを作っていく上で僕たちはHANDでよく体験する魔法のようなものを表現したくて、200人以上の人が最高に楽しんでる中レコーディングされたこのミックスは普段スタジオで作ってるものと違って、時間が経ってもずっと特別に感じられるものになっていると思うよ。
