DJ T-1000 joins for DifferentSound Podcast #154.

Detroit-born, Berlin-based Alan D. Oldham has been called "Detroit Techno's Renaissance Man" by Muzik Magazine (UK). Electronic musician, label owner, remixer, graphic illustrator, and international DJ, Oldham-under his stage name DJ T-1000-does it all. A lifelong cartoonist and graphic designer, a young Oldham published his own indie comic book "Johnny Gambit" in 1987 to local notoriety. Hired that same year by his childhood friend Derrick May to illustrate several memorable pieces for his new Transmat label, this led to Oldham's very first involvement in the fledgling techno scene. More art requests quickly followed, most famously from the Djax-Up-Beats label (NL), where his art took center stage for many years (the lone EP that Oldham produced for Djax, under the name Signal To Noise Ratio, brought home a 1991 Detroit Metro Times Music Award for best single in "Detroit Is Burning"). At the same time, college-student Oldham was hired at local radio station WDET, hosting Detroit's first-ever all-electronic radio program, "Fast Forward," introducing artists like UR, Richie Hawtin and Carl Craig to local airwaves.When he's not behind the decks or in the studio producing electronic dance music for labels like Tresor Berlin, Inzec (CH), Minimalsoul (CH), or his own Pure Sonik and Generator imprints, Oldham has provided artwork for the electronic music industry for almost 20 years. Also, his drawings and large-scale paintings have been on display in art galleries in Chicago, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, and most recently a sold-out opening in Amsterdam.

Jeff Mills, along with Robert Hood, Carl Craig, and Joey Beltram, is one of the biggest American names in techno. Championed for his music's relentless pursuit of hardness and his stripped-down, almost industrial DJ sets, Mills is the latest in a long line of Detroit-bred talent to take on an international reputation.

A founding member of noted Motor City institution Underground Resistance, Mills helped build the artist roster and label ideology (as well as much of its back catalog) with partners "Mad" Mike Banks and Robert "Noise" Hood before moving to New York in 1992 to pursue more vigorously his solo and DJ career (with a resident spot at the legendary Limelight and a recording contract with the noted German label Tresor). (Although rumors of bad blood between the early UR crew have been denied by all involved, Mills' decision to split was apparently total, with Banks all but repudiating his involvement with Mills and Mills distancing himself from the continuing political militancy of Banks and the UR organization.) 

Mills' UR-related releases (including "The Punisher" and "Seawolf") are stripped-down and erratic, fusing elements of hardcore acid and industrial techno to the sparse Detroit aesthetic. Not surprisingly, his post-UR sound hasn't eased a bit, although UR's penchant for the four-track has been replaced by higher-quality production.

Prior to his involvement in UR, Mills was a DJ at Detroit public radio station WDET (he was also studying architecture at the time), spinning everything from Meat Beat Manifesto and Nine Inch Nails to Chicago house and underground Detroit techno. He began producing in the mid-'80s, working with Tony Srock on the project the Final Cut. 

Mills met Banks through a local garage group Members of the House, who Banks was working with in the late '80s. Mills remixed a track on a Members 12-inch, and his and Banks' shared love for Chicago soul and the harder edge of Detroit techno blossomed into Underground Resistance as a combined business and creative enterprise. The pair, along with Robert Hood, recorded several EPs and singles together, including tracks such as "Waveform," and "Sonic," before Mills defected to New York in 1992 to pursue a residency at the Limelight club and a solo career recording for Tresor and his own label, Axis. Mills' discography includes two full-length volumes of Waveform Transmissions for Tresor, a live album and rarities collection for the British label React, and the first album in a new contract with Sony Japan, as well as a handful of 12-inch EPs on Axis and several collaborations with Robert Hood on his M-Plant label. In 2000, Mills took more memorable action by scoring a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 1926 film Metropolis, screened around the world at venues including the Museum of Music in Paris, London's Royal Albert Hall, and the Vienna International Film Festival.

The debut release on TOYTOY’s label comes from resident Dogstarr, who channels the spirit of
Johannesburg’s underground into a five-track EP, plus a hypnotic remix from CraigPlacid. Dance
Mrwebi Dance moves through deep, driving, and euphoric spaces — a record that mirrors the diverse
energy of TOYTOY’s dance floor.

1 ) Dance Mrwebi Dance
The title track locks into a pulse, its hypnotic percussion and rolling low-end creating a meditative
groove that feels equal parts ritual and release.

2) Moonlight
Sharp, urgent, and atmospheric, Moonlight moves with a restless drive. Metallic textures and layered
rhythms give it a shadowy tension that pulls dancers deeper into the floor.

3) Left the Building (Apartment Version)
This cut slows things down and stretches out the space. With its stripped, dub-infused feel, it’s a heady,
introspective moment on the EP, perfect for deeper hours.

4) Get Off Your Block( Extended Version)
The updated version of this track is faster, darker, and more intense — a peak-time weapon built for
strobe-lit rooms. Its relentless percussion and raw energy capture Dogstarr’s harder edge.

5) Sunrise Over Gwi Gwi (CraigPlacid Remix)
CraigPlacid closes the EP with a widescreen rework, morphing the original into a hypnotic sunrise
anthem. Expansive and deep, it feels like the perfect come-up after the storm.

Chicago born and bred DJ, Producer Joseph Manumaleuna aka DJ Hyperactive needs little introduce to those versed in the history of techno. As one of Daft Punk’s “Teachers” and “brother of the humble” according to Resident Adviser, his contributions to the underground continue to span generations. Honing his skills in the highly influential scene and sound of Chicago in the early 90s, DJ Hyperactive gained instant international recognition and has since gone on to play the most legendary and lauded events and venues over the last 20 years, such as Orbit/ Leeds, Liquid Room/ Tokyo, Love Parade/ Berlin, Shelter & Smart Bar/ Chicago, Interface/ Los Angeles, Movement/ Detroit, Basement & Output/ Brooklyn, Tresor & Berghain/ Berlin and the list doesn’t stop there. Also over the course of his career, he has produced over 100 remixes and original tracks, including classics such as ‘Venus’ & ‘Wide Open’/ Missile, ‘25HRs’/ Droid, “Music Box/ ‘4Trk’, Reptilian Tank & Chicago’/Contact, Drop Bass, Communique, Hybrid, Truncate, Figure, Plus 8, CLR, Blank Code, Impact Mechanics, Illegal Alien, to name a few.
