Verbz & Friends - March 2023

The third part of the EXPEDIT:ION series is a journey through the golden age of liquid. 

So called 'Liquid Funk', a name taken from a Fabio mix CD of the same name, burst to the forefront of the D&B scene in the early 2000s. Positive, deep and soulful, It was a welcome change of pace from the dark sounds that had dominated drum and bass at the end of the millenium.

From 2000 to 2004 prolific producers such as Marcus Intalex & ST Files, Calibre and High Contrast honed their craft and made the emerging liquid sound a cornerstone of the D&B scene. 

Influential labels  Soul:r, Defunked, Hospital and Fabio's own Creative Source prospered. However, nothing last forever, and although liquid D&B remains a huge part of D&Bs identity, in my opinion it is no longer the soulful and creative force it once was.

For this mix I had at first tried to select a bunch of underappreciated personal favourites, but despite deliberately avoiding a tonne of anthems, it still turned into a M.I.S.T. / High Contrast love-in.

Around this time, 2000 - 2004, I was buying more records than ever, and playing on two different stations, as such all of these tracks saw a lot of rotation.

With releases on 7th Storey Projects, Green Bay Wax, Dark Age and Parallax, Tim Reaper first got into drum & bass through an Andy C mix CD found in an issue of Mixmag and released his first production in 2010. Launching his imprint Globex Corp alongside Dwarde in 2016, the pair have hosted artists such as Dev/Null, Worldwide Epidemic, Gand, Mr Sensi and more across 10 volumes. Now teaming up with Lobster Theremin for a collaborative release LT-GLOBE-XXX which features tracks from Slacker, Dwarde, Background and Marco Lazovic. 

For this mix, Tim Reaper introduces us to his imprint saying, "for anyone who may not be familiar with the Globex Corp series on 7th Storey Projects that me and Dwarde have been making tunes for, here's a mix I did a few months ago which contains every single tune from Vol. 1-9. I was a working DJ/producer 1996-2001 (UK). Lover of electronic music since 1990. I use this site to share some of my mix tapes and the best mixes from other DJs that I've accumulated over the years. This is purely for entertainment, sharing and promoting good music.

I did produce some tracks back in 1998-2000 but only released a couple of EPs with DJ Relay under the names Low Profile & Two-Step2. We are getting back into production again as of 2020 and will be re-releasing some of our old and new tracks going forward, find our tracks on Juno, Beatport, Amazon, etc.
