American funk group, formed in a Brooklyn, New York City high school in the early 1980s by James 'D Train' Williams (lead vocals) and Hubert Eaves III (keyboards, bass, drums and arrangements). They garnered much success on the early 1980s disco scene.

Lonzo (Alonzo Williams), Andre Young (Dr. Dre), Marquette Hawkins (Cli-N-Tel), DJ Yella (Antoine Carraby), Barry Severe (Shakespeare), Mona Lisa Young, Michelle Toussaint (Michel'le). 
The group was originally formed by a Compton club owner Alonzo Williams as a mobile DJ crew for several years and it wasn't until 1983 that they decided to record music. In 1984 the group debuted on Lonzo's Kru-Cut record label releasing the single "Surgery" followed by "Juice". Both records proved to become local electro-rap favorites selling many units on the west coast. The following year the group put out their first album World Class. The group's dancer, Shakespeare, later replaced Cli-N-Tel as they signed to Epic Records releasing a string of singles and their second album Rapped In Romance. The Wreckin' Cru enlisted aspiring rapper Ice Cube to help as a ghostwriter for the "House Calls / Cabbage Patch" single in 1987. Shortly before disbanding over financial problems, the slow jam record "Before You Turn Off The Lights" (which featured Michel'le) became a big hit all across the country's urban and pop charts by early 1988. Dr. Dre and DJ Yella later continued producing music with N.W.A. while Shakespeare later pursued a position as a pastor. Michel'le married Dr. Dre and released an album on Ruthless Records. Lonzo attempted to play off the big success of the group's last single by reassembling a new World Class Wreckin' Cru and releasing the album Turn Off The Lights In The Fast Lane in 1988.

The Beat Club started off in Miami in the late 80s as a studio project of producer Ony Rodriguez; with his girlfriend and future-wife, Mireya Valls on vocals. Their track Security drew influences from the Miami Bass sound and was successful enough to gain them a major label deal with Atlantic Records. Soon afterwards they moved to the UK and accepted an offer from New Order's manager, Rob Gretton to sign for his recently launched label, Rob's Records. 

Since then, The Beat Club has remained a "faceless" studio project; nevertheless evolving to incorporate Ony's various styles and influences.

R. J.'s Latest Arrival was an American R&B, dance, and soul music band from Detroit, Michigan, United States, who formed in the late 1970s and reached the peak of their popularity in the mid-1980s. They released their debut self-titled debut album in 1979. In 1984, they scored one of their first big hits with "Shackles," featured on their Harmony album. Drummer Rudy "Famous" Maldonado left the band during The Shackles Tour in 1984, although he was featured in the video for the follow-up single, "Harmony." The group scored their biggest hit single in 1988 with "Off The Hook (With Your Love)."They scored other moderate hits on the US Billboard R&B chart throughout the 1980s.[1] The group later became more based in traditional R&B and soul music, but broke up in 1990.

Rice went on to form Barak Records, an independent hip-hop record label based in Detroit. The label's most notable acts were Slum Village and SMD. Rice also produced the majority of the album Hello by singer-songwriter Poe, including the first single "Angry Johnny".

Munro continued in the entertainment business creating the entertainment/record company Zycron Media and Zycron Records, creating, producing and hosting the Hotspots television show airing on NBC and CBS affiliates.

To collectors, enthusiasts and dancers, asking when disco ends and boogie begins will yield a fascinating and vast array of responses. Upon their shelves of twelves and sevens of original pressings and increasing reissues and edits, the change might not even seem marked, as the full scale force of disco gave way to a more intimate, sensual, but no less physical sound. Finding underground support in the 1980s nightclubs of London among mixed black and white audiences, crate digging DJs soon caught wind of the genre’s future-facing evolution in the US.
Bubbling prior to the mixtape culture of the foundations of contemporary hip hop, or the stark futurism of Detroit techno and electro, both of which owe a debt of inspiration to boogie, the genre could loosely be described as a bridge between acoustic and electronic instruments. The arrangements are often loose and live, but usually doused in a gooey neon sheen. And while some of the synth work may sound primitive by contemporary standards, it has maintained an enthusiastic following swept up in its occasional weirdness as production methods grew more clinical and precise. Boogie is flamboyant party music, even when it can evoke the longing of heartbreak as easily as the promise of good times.

Formed in London, 1980, as a trio: guitarist and vocalist Carl McIntosh, vocalist Jane Eugene and keyboardist Steve Nichol. The latter two left the group in 1989, due to musical differences. McIntosh continued with new vocalists for a few years.

Loose Ends developed a high class synth soul/r&b/urban contemporary style, perfected by producer Nick Martinelli. They released five albums. Among their hits are "Hangin' On A String (Contemplating)", "Magic Touch" (1985), "Slow Down" (1986), "Watching You" (1988) and "Don't Be A Fool" (1990).
