STREETSOUNDS ELECTRO MASHED-CRUCIAL ELECTRO 1

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Bridging the gap between the disco rap of the early 80s and the early sample based hip hop of the mid to late 80s (featured on the  mixes posted in this series to date) is a rich groove of drum machine led rap tracks characterised by the raw stripped down sound of bass heavy 808 kicks and snappy hand claps. But somewhere else in the melting pot of music released in that same era is the unlikely blend of fast paced electronic beats, funk, rap and leftfield European electronica that formed the Electro scene of the day. Whilst 80s Electro sub-genres are plentiful, this mix doesn’t concentrate too heavily on any one of them; West Coast dancefloor cuts from the likes of Egyptian Lover rub shoulders with European pioneers Kraftwerk and other US Electro Rap and Electro Funk. Cover art pays homage to Street Sounds iconic 80s 'Electro' compilation series.

Quick mix I did of some records I had hanging around in a crate near my decks.
17 tracks, 30 mins , all vinyl (duh), all live (duh).Big tunes, obscurities, darker stuff, hands in the air stuff. All sounding pretty grimey since my needles are trashed and some of these records have seen a few too many plays, but all tunes I really love and am happy to have in one mix now.

Chopped Herring Records was founded back in 2001. The same year DJ Woody became the first European DJ to win the International Turntablist Federation World Championships. At that time Herring HQ was located in Manchester, a 40 minute drive through Lancashire to Woody's hometown of Burnley. Chopped Herring Records' owner Pro Celebrity Golf and Woody had crossed paths on numerous times spinnin' in Manchester and the North West of England during the 90's, so it only seems natural (like the migration of Herring in the Baltic Sea) that  C.H Recs and DJ Woody should 'hook up' for a mix at some point. 'Fly Fishing', a selection of released and unreleased tracks on Chopped Herring Records, mixed by DJ Woody is something we've been thinking about for some time. Since the Herring catalogue has grown dramatically in the last couple of years it seemed an appropriate time to get in touch with one of the greatest DJ's to ever do it to de-bone some Herring fillets in his inimitable, flavasome way. Chopped Herring Records and DJ Woody proudly present 'Fly Fishing'..

Got into DJ'ing in the early half of the 80's.Originally i started off off life as a breakdancer but was also  drawn to the scratching element of the music.So,as one did back then,i cut out a slipmatt from an old pillow case and got to work on an Amstrad stack system.I couldn't use the volume control so had to use the function button to cut the sound.This gave it an Eric B style scratch,messy but it did a job.It didn't take long for the turntable to eventually die on me so i used anything that played records until i finally got my 1210's in the early 90's.
I'd constantly be chucking out mix tapes but unfortunately living where i did the want for hip hop wasn't there so i moved onto the club circuit.
I did that for a good few years but got bored as the crowd then was only into what was in the charts and i liked breaking new stuff so eventually i knocked it on the head and only did the occasional house party.
Many years later,by chance,i bumped into an old friend who told me about some software he used to mix on.I got it and started putting some mixes together.This was all cool but i got bored quickly just blending one track into another every 5 minutes or so so started doing mash up mixes.I figured if i was using a program to mix then don't do what i could do on my turntables.
I know many DJ's don't class this art of mixing as real DJ'ing and of course they are right but i use my many years experience as a DJ to make these mixes work.
I've had many mixes played on The Streetsounds radio show with Morgan khan and also been lucky enough to be asked to mix up some albums(turning them into minimixes for promotional purposes).
My preference is old school but i do mix modern music also,basically,if i like it i'll mix it.
If there are any record labels or artists out there wanting to put out a megamix type album then(or minimix) inbox me.If i can work with it i will work with it.
