It is Monday the 3rd of February 2014 and we have DJ Red for the first time on the CLR Podcast. Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Simona Calvani p.k.a. DJ Red has been a resident for the Ultrabeat nights at Rome´s most important dance venue Goa club for the last 13 years. In 2012 she joined the BPitch Control artist roster and released her first record “Eyes Are Blind” on the BPitch Control label. Her mantra “creation is the source of energy” underpins the importance of the relationship between artist and public. Her innovative DJ style is characterized by Techno-Dub influences, dark and deep sounds. Ho ho ho, the mystery-shrouded Rrose - named after Marcel Duchamp’s eponymous persona, punches in right on cue for Xmas with an absolute monster of a two-hour jaunt into their exquisitely twisted headspace. Having served up some of the finest techno slabs of the past decade through the likes of Sandwell District, Stroboscopic Artefacts and now their own dedicated imprint, Eaux, Rrose steps in the series with a bonkers mix of dusty techno hustle-and-bustle, neatly alternating sequences of pumping 4x4 aerobatics, searing, noise-adjacent outbursts and eerie melodies to hypnotic effect. A constant balancing act of raw power and haunting score, Rrose’s RYC mix takes us on a deep and fascinating trip into genre-unbound territories, where only abandon and wildness reign supreme. Very excited to share this set, recorded live at the Colorfloor of Lofi during Coda on the final day of ADE 2024. The warm and smokey colorfloor set the tone. A mysterious and intimate atmosphere that I wanted to translate into this 3-hour journey.

I began with lighter, fast-paced rhythms, gradually adding layers of darker soundscapes and heavier kicks. As the set progressed, I switched to a more entrancing energy, building up to an atmosphere that felt both groovy and hypnotic. An ideal handover to Kia and Reptant, who followed after me.

The long running stirrings of Surgeon (Anthony Child) and Regis (Karl O’Connor) under the conjunct British Murder Boys are not for the faint of heart. Their alleged final act came before a Tokyo crowd in 2012, but the goodbye only lasted three years and with their Amsterdam return, a reformulation of their signature industrial sound. The duo, both at their acme with little signs of descent, have together found a hybrid techno that scales high and large, bringing together thumping bass and hissing feedback for a distinctly belligerent and primal club sound. It’s not all obvious, their 2020 cover of Lou Reed’s Real Good Time Together offered a machine-inflected spin on the original, and opened the door for their debut LP Active Agents And House Boys (2024). At the heart is a provocative, sexually-charged and punkish techno that offloads bristling rhythms and defiant energy, one that’s a little more controlled and mathematical in practice. Following on from their show at Bassiani back in November comes this next mix. Bassiani Podcast 250 is an hour-long and live recorded assault: thrashing beats, crazed and bleepy arps, EBM-style shouts, a decadent and rageful call to arms and one of the most important instalments in this long running series. Back-breaking industrial techno from these two heavyweights and originators of the Birmingham sound.

You may be familiar with the work of Reeko, the Pole Group co-founder and Spanish auteur whose furious techno has expanded the definitions of his genre and piqued clubfloors over the last decade; Juan Rico’s alias has galvanised the world of electronic music like few can. Over the course of his active years he’s worked on a parallel body of work under the pseudonym Architectural, at first in the shadows of anonymity, now coming into the light. Through this second epithet he channels a more fluid sound, one that uses much of the same percussive scaffolding but goes deeper. The project began back in 2010 with a string of releases on his self-titled and newly pressed label and the 2012 release of Peacetime on Semantica Records, cementing his rise as a deft and mysterious talent from the Asturian coast. The intrigue continued with a fusing of his two projects in 2013, a Reeko and Architectural release on his native Pole Group entitled The Blue Album, a dialogue between the two visions, harsh kicks of the first fused with the trailing reverb of the latter. The next two years saw a pair of releases develop the sound he’d built via his own label and Dutch imprint Wolfskull. In tandem, his sets at Tresor, Printworks, Robert Johnson, Bassiani, Awakenings and his local festival LEV have brought his heavy atmospherics to a wider audience. His sound is primal, dubby and immersive, the output of many years of sonic research and collaboration, paced-out and rich with intelligent details. Here, for one of the most important mixes in this long running series, comes Bassiani Podcast 252, a truly singular piece recorded back in November from this paragon of experimental techno.

Born and raised in Italy, Dj Red is a key figure of the Roman techno scene. Resident of the former  iconic Goa Club
,her contribution has been essential to the development of Rome’s club culture. 
Constantly travelling among Rome and Berlin over the past two decades, she has built up a unique approach to electronic music both as a producer and a performer.

When in the DJ booth, DJ Red fully deploys her eccentric and multifaceted personality. From Berghain, Tresor to Awakenings and Exit Festival,Terraforma Festival. She never fails to deeply connect with her audience. The manic perfection in selecting every single record and the commitment of her daily research makes it impossible not to be dragged by the intense, visionary techno sets.

The thriving passion for music blossoms also in her productions. Intertwining dynamic rhythms arising of electronic drums, organic tonalities and esoteric machines, DJ Red gives birth to aethereal, aqueous soundscapes that reach the very core of her listeners.
