I messaged Laura about going to the show- she answered with “Don’t tell Marko, it’ll be a surprise!”.  A day later a message from Dawn (their manager):  “I had an idea to ask you to spin…”.   Me: “Yes, I can totally do that”. The rest is…well it’s a bucket list fulfillment, that’s what it is!

This is from the 2nd day: I started with Weather Storm (Massive Attack- before this show, theirs was THE biggest opening slot I had when they played Houston in the early 2000s, AND the weather looked ominous, but luckily no rain), took a few detours into reggae, hip hop, mixed in Heatwave and managed to “slip in” MARKSONTHEKEYS (a track I did in the early 2000s that has Mark on The Keys,  I believe the keyboard also had some marks, but I digress).  

Picked up the tempo from there and was able to end with a current anthem Oscar P’s “Split Personality”.   Excuse me if I stumbled a tiny bit here and there- it’s part of the craft.  Thanks for listening!

From the forthcoming album Qingxi (Soular Productions): Bees.  Inspired by an encounter with a beekeeper on the ancestral quest  (generously supported by Asia Society Texas Center).

2. Bee Keeper
It was at the foot of the mountain in Qingxi Forest where we met the Bee Keeper, a welcoming man who accepted my journey with due and needed warmth, as if he himself were my kin. In Chinese sociocultural lens, the bee keeper is held in high regard as other land-workers are, their commitment to earning an income off the land embraced as evidence of loyalty to place over all else. And while this Bee Keeper depends on the sales of his carefully harvested honey, we departed with gifts of two large jars. And in
keeping with the familial vibe, he extended additional generosity in a shared tea ceremony and access to his private beehive boxes.
