CunTea Haus Party | Fall 2021

The Tenth Serving of SoundCream is High Church: Revival. It is for giving wings to your feet, putting a kick in your step, and getting you back to church on the dance floor. For my Fourth Serving back in September, I did a High Church set, which has remained one of the most popular of my SoundCreams. To celebrate my favorite time of year, I knew I wanted to revisit that sound. Growing up in the rural South, church revivals were a serious time in the community, and when I would most often hear I’d ended up on prayer lists. Yes, that’s actually a thing that happened. The Fear of God was commonly thrown at me by math teachers, coaches, my peers, family, and even the principal on one very interesting occasion. So now I enjoy using the sound of house music to lift people up and hopefully have the strength to face their Fear. Of God. Of Life. Of Fear itself. 

In the fourth track of the arc, you will hear the powerful vocals of Ann Nesby, celebrated vocalist and “Queen of Inspirational Soul.” Aside from her illustrious solo career, Nesby also won two Grammys in 1991 and 1993 as lead singer for the 30-piece gospel choir, Sounds of Blackness.

As in the last Fourth Serving, you will again hear the legendary voice of the only Chuck Roberts, which you will instantly recognize. As a refresher, his speech for “My House” by Rhythm Controll in 1987 can be heard sampled across house tracks on every dancefloor in the world. I am proud to feature the brand new track released this month by one of my heroes, Mark Knight, along with James Hurt and Cari Golden — You Are A God. When he released this track, he said, “Some say this was played just before the hug rip in the O2’s [Brixton Academy] roof appeared! All I know is that it destroys dance floors all over the globe whenever I play it.”  

One of my favorite finds for this set fit like the puzzle piece you lost and found when you least expected it. I had the concept for this set back in January with a few tracks already pulled to frame it, and knew it would be entitled, “High Church: Revival.” It wasn’t until just this month that I came across the most appropriate track, “The Revival,” by Lizzie Curious and James Hurr. That’s what I love about digging through works and going down rabbit holes of sound. You never know what perfect song will find you. I hope this set finds you when you need it most, and lifts you to a better place for whatever may come your way. 

The Tenth Serving is dedicated to DJ Vicki Powell and Sunday Service in Atlanta, which revives this Easter Sunday at Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium. That is where I first learned the true power of house music. I firmly believe Vicki and Deep South are some of the most important figures in American queer music today. Thank you for your testimony.
