For EYX010 London-based Italian producer Ikävä Pii returns on the label (following their first appearance with ‘EPOS Digitale’ from September 2021) with a new mind-melter EP titled ‘Process
Fatigue’, their first release of 2022.

Written “literally” while keeping “Discord and Ableton open at all times” and funnelling “ideas from one channel to the other”, ‘Process Fatigue’ contains four quirky club ready cuts reflecting the
intent of the artist in developing new creative processes.

A downshifting sound signals the beginning of Protocol Art, the opening track introducing the listener to the new broad palette of sound from the Italian produce. This dance tool plays around
the alternation of rhythm and melody, while enveloped synthesisers and warped samples convolute into kaleidoscopic musical textures until the last bell hits and dissolves into silence.

Fast paced hit-hats, a syncopated rhythmic session and analog harmonies and effects follow next in Group Chats with High Signal-to-Noise Ratio Become Coops, delivering an unconventional DJ
tool with an incredible attention to sound designs.

Reaching towards the core of Ikävä Pii’s latest work there is title track Process Fatigue, which brings the listener into dark dubstep and obscure dance influenced territories driven by leading sub basses, an incessant kick and a glitchy percussions.

The closing cut is Relevant Channel which kicks off with atmospherical pads, a combination of wild gamelan percussions, tweaked synthesisers and time stretching effects succeeded
imminently diverting the track into a flamboyant rhythmic dance.

“How do we decide how to decide? Process Fatigue is an involuntary reflection of the shared
Sisyphean nature of grassroots organising and artistic creation.
It was composed while researching a method and developing a set of tools for both SODAA (the
London collective working on a model for a community-operated club) and a new personal
creative cycle; Discord and Ableton open at all times, ideas crossing from one channel to another -
while also adjusting to chronic tiredness.
New protocols spawn new art and ways of sharing it - but avoid fetishising the process, or you’ll
get stuck. Just make the tune! Do the party! Mess up! Have fun!”

Ikävä Pii - Relevant Channel

Hailing from Tokyo, Prettybwoy stands as an emblematic figure within Japan’s burgeoning experimental bass music scene. Following the success of his 2021 album released on the esteemed Chinese label SVBKVLT, Prettybwoy makes a triumphant return to POLAAR with a fresh EP featuring two original tracks and a pair of electrifying remixes.

The EP commences with “Purify,” a track characterized by its striking contrasts. Seamlessly fusing raw, overdriven kicks and beat structures with delicate kalimbas, the piece is enveloped by an array of otherworldly robotic sounds and textures. As Nobuto, the artist behind Prettybwoy, explains, “I think that when we purify something, clean and dirt are melting in the same result.” The track skillfully builds tension, maintaining a radiant and luminous aura throughout.

Scores is a compilation exploring musical notations and how they can be interpreted as sounds. People have always tried to translate sonic expressions into visual cues that could be archived, passed down, and transformed back into music. 

From symbols to numbers, grids, staffs, figures or abstract shapes, several languages have been developed and continuously questioned to improve the ability to retain the emotion and meaning sounds can convey - what lies behind the veil.
 
What if this time, the notation would come beforehand?

The project unfolded in two phases. In the first one, visual artists from the Global URL Nation could propose one sheet of music score, free of interpretation. They were invited to play with musical notations and explore what it would even mean.

In the second phase, artists from GUN could pick one sheet and create a track trying to follow it as much as possible. It invited them to question music as a physical object, with its shapes, colors, textures and layers with the following :

__How is the overall composition? Are there any axis or lines that could be interpreted as a timeline or a melodic scale?
__How many discrete elements are in the image? How are they laid out?
__What are the shapes involved?  What is their scale? Do they have sharp or blurry outlines?
__What are the colors/textures used? How do they relate with each other in terms of tones, contrasts…?
__How are the different elements layered on top of each other? Are they superimposed or do they merge in some way?
__How would they translate them in musical terms, such as textures, notes, structures, timbres, rhythms, dynamics? 

It welcomed Bademjan, Baje Nunca, C+Vis, Capiuz, Clair X, C.T.A.A.M.  Ecovoron, Epiphagi, HeedLess, Mambo Kahn, migu, POL100, Yau Hei ASJ & Ziyiz for 14 tracks ranging from ethereal scorescapes to hyperstimulating scratches. Sounds and shapes weave together, blurring the boundaries between the two media to create one whole entity
