It’s been six years since Marco Polo took the hip-hop world by storm with his Rawkus/Soulspazm Records debut LP, Port Authority. This album not only established the Toronto, Canada native as one of the top emerging producers in his field, but also transformed Marco into a very sought-after collaborator as well. He has since gone on to release the collaborative project with Torae, Double Barrel, in 2009 and has also worked with acclaimed artists such as; Masta Ace, Special Teamz, Heltah Skeltah, Buckshot, KRS-One, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Sean Price, Copywrite, Vinnie Paz and Large Professor.

After generating tremendous momentum this summer with his free LP, Newport Authority 2, Marco Polo returns to offer up the highly anticipated sequel, PA2: The Director’s Cut, which is the culmination of thousands of hours of creative energy, manpower, crate-digging, knob-twisting, Newport-smoking and coffee-bingeing, to create an impeccable infrastructure of music that will resonate with hip-hop fans across the world.

Fans have already heard glimpses of what MP has in store for PA2: The Director’s Cut, as his heartfelt dedication to Gang Starr’s Guru (“G.U.R.U.” featuring Talib Kweli & DJ Premier) not only went viral in a day, but also clearly resonated with the late MC’s friends and family as they offered up their support for the track. The LP’s most recent leak, “3-O-Clock” did what hip-hop fans have been impatiently waiting on for over fifteen years; reuniting Organized Konfusion (Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po) on the same track. Official music videos for these tracks will be released in the weeks leading up to the album. The “G.U.R.U.” video is a nostalgic tribute to the legendary lyricist, directed by Todd Angkasuwan, while “3-O-Clock”, directed by The Doppelgangaz, effectively captures the grimy and gritty New York vibe on this MP x OK collabo.

PA2: The Director’s Cut is not a “compilation” project. Rather, much like projects from the producers (Jay Dee, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, etc), that have influenced Marco, it’s a seamlessly blended piece of art featuring a who’s-who of the industry’s top MCs; each track crafted and specialized to fit each MC’s strengths. This is evident throughout PA2. On “West Coast Love” Marco displays his versatility, cooking up some premo G-Funk for West Coast legends MC Eiht and King Tee to spread their Cali love on. Further, “Astonishing” featuring Large Professor, Inspectah Deck, O.C. and Tragedy is like riding shotgun to “The Tunnel” in Doc Brown’s DeLoreon, and the shimmering “Strange Brew” with Gangrene (Alchemist & Oh No) pushes the BPMs to maximum levels. The LP’s apt closing track, “Glory” (Finish Hard) featuring Masta Ace, A.G. and Posdnuos (of De La Soul) offers up a hilarious commentary from Ace on Marco’s tedious “work ethic” and ends with commentary from everyone’s favorite beer-drinking Canucks Bob and Doug McKenzie (of Strange Brew fame) who revisit their “Strange Brew” days.

However, “Preemo” as he’s affectionately known has always been a conduit for artists of all genres to attach their lyrics to his complex rhythm of the streets--- D’Angelo, Macy Gray, Janet Jackson, Maroon 5, Miguel, Neneh Cherry, Lion Babe, Yuna, Anderson .Paak, & Christina Aguilera (which his work won a Grammy for) to name just a few. Enter Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter and musician from Wantagh, New York who traded coasts–bouncing around West Coast cities and enhanced herself artistically; shunning categories, confinement, and convention. The last month has been filled with "1st's" for Torii Wolf; premiering her debut solo track, 1st,” with Pitchfork and the corresponding video with Vevo,  announcing her debut solo album, Flow Riiot, (that just happens to be produced by DJ Premier) and now her “1st” remix featuring Dilated Peoples; which was premiered today by Mass Appeal. 

The original version of “1st” found Premier digging into his past catalog and reshuffling the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production which appeared on Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” With the release of the remix today, “1st” has officially come full circle as Torii and Preemo recruit Evidence and Rakka to officially join them; and with their respective verses and Premier implementing extra punch to the drums and additional piano harmonies—the “1st” (Remix) sounds like an entirely different song.

“I changed the arrangement of Torii's verses and removed the second verse completely” Premier relayed to Mass Appeal.  “I added some extra piano harmonies and it fit on the first attempt. I played all of the sounds; including the piano so there are no samples on the original nor the remix.  Ev and Rakaa sent me 24 bars in total and I split them up into a sixteen and an eight bar set up.   They sounded so good from the original it was a no brainer to get them on the Remix.” 

“When I first laid the song down with Preem we didn't really know where the song would end up" Torii stated.  Preem makes the beat and I express the emotion it evokes inside of me. From there it evolves. Preem is brilliant and he found the perfect line from “Good As Gone” to throw into the mix of the song. I am blown away by what Evidence and Raaka have come up with on this Remix. I love how well they were able to connect with the concept. To feel understood and to hear how other people can unleash a similar emotion (in their own words) and share an understanding of the story is an incredible feeling.” 

Discussing the “1st” (Remix) with Mass Appeal, Ev and Rakaa discuss how Remix discussions began in earnest almost immediately.   “I thought it was dope right off the bat” Evidence shared.  “I kept playing it and really peeped what she was talking about; and felt it even more. Of course I was excited that Preem was cutting our voices up.  I think every rapper secretly wishes that will happen to them.” Rakaa expressed similar sentiments “When I first heard the original, I was kind of shocked because I didn't know we were going to be such an integral part of the song. It's just a line, but Premier put that coal under pressure until it became a diamond. The power and emotion of Tori's voice mixed with a uniquely dope chamber of Boom-Bap created something that is somehow both dark and brilliant--almost haunting. I wanted to be a part of any remix that they were doing immediately, so it was an honor to get the call from my big brother.”
