Cosmic Bridge Records welcomes J:Kenzo for a double dose of jungle nostalgia viewed through the lens of its recent renaissance.

On ’Skatta’ b/w ‘Alight’, the British producer returns to the sound he first embraced as a teenager by infusing the basics of jungle — cut up breaks, layered pads, and vocal samples from the never-ending trove of Jamaica’s music history — with modern techniques and a healthy dose of low end.

The A-side beings with a throwback, uplifting intro that promptly fades into a tough dancehall-inspired rhythm flourished with shards of breakbeats, catchy chants, and sirens echoing into the darkest corners of the club. J:Kenzo keeps the energy high with scatterings of percussion that play against the distinct bass line melodies. Flip over and watch him set the dance alight with a subtle exercise in junglistic rollage, four minutes of uncompromising break extravagance, tight edits, and pulsing bass that take no prisoners. J:Kenzo treats the classic sound with a reverent approach without being afraid to twist it up. “This release is my ode to 1990s jungle,” he admits.

After emerging in the late 2000s, J:Kenzo first came to prominence in 2010 thanks to the keen ears and support of Youngsta, landing his debut album on the legendary Tempa label before signing releases to Metalheadz, 31 Records, and Exit. His contribution to the growing Cosmic Bridge discography further confirms his talent.

Cosmic Bridge welcomes Dutch producer TMSV, the alias of Tomas Roels, to its expanding roster with a four-track EP built for the adventurous sound system seekers. 

Over Out arrives a few years after Roels began sending demos and music to label boss Om Unit. As the TMSV sound evolved from Roels’ roots in the dubstep scene towards a more personal, refined take on the nexus between the various strains of high tempo bass music, his new material proved too irresistible for Om Unit. “I had to have these tracks,” the label head says of Over Out. “Just well produced good music that works on a system and isn’t limited by genre or scene rules.” 

The EP opens with the title track, a shuffling riddim that contrasts a rolling wobble bass against energetic drums. ‘Over Out’ sets the tone for the release and draws a line between TMSV’s past and where he sees himself heading. ‘Torpedo Riddim’ continues this theme with a deep, pitch-bent bass, time-stretch vocal samples, and loose drum rolls. A take on jungle that is equal parts nostalgic and current. The B side opens with ‘King David Riddim’, another dancefloor workout built around recognizable vocal and horn samples that draws inspiration from Chicago juke and filters its energy through the lessons of drum & bass and jungle. Closing proceedings we find ‘Rolla’ and another unmissable vocal sample from the annals of jungle music calling you back for one last dance. For this one, TMSV slides into the music’s ragga era and pulls from its tropes to build a solid, eyes-down production that oscillates between juke and techno repetition to create unshakable energy. 

TMSV is a fitting addition to the Cosmic Bridge family and Over Out announces the next step in his musical journey. Future dread music for the open minded.

Colorhythm returns to Modern Ruin with a darker take on his unique sound.

A no-nonsense start to the release with 'Lavina' takes us into a different
side to Colorhythm's production - a gritty and techy roller switching seamlessly
between halftime and triplet grooves.

Title track 'Fission' starts off with a deliberate intro sequence that funnels into
what might be the footwork soundtrack of a nuclear reactor. Percussion is the
standout as Colorhythm plays with shakers, hats and almost breakbeat sounds
to create a cloudy and moody soundscape.

'Bionic' is the no-holds-barred successor to 'Fission'. Growling synthesizers
amidst tension inducing melodic progressions make for a compelling antithesis
to the title track. 

Another Modern Ruin favourite, Stayhigh, rounds up this release with a remix 
of 'Bionic'. Chopped vocals and typical footwork triplets smartly intertwine
with the initial groove and vibe of 'Bionic' while emphasizing the urgent and
frantic nature of footwork, creating a pleasing sonic crescendo.

French producer Moresounds makes a welcome return to Cosmic Bridge five years after his debut. The Paris-based dub scientist was one of the first artist Om Unit picked for the label and the co-sign helped launch his career, which has since included contributions to Astrophonica, Doc Scott’s 31 Records, and remixes for Machinedrum as well as a growing touring schedule that saw him take his unique live show to Asia and America in 2016. Mutation Experts catches Moresounds in a more experimental vibe with four cuts that play with the rhythmic potentials of jungle in a different style.

Ting N Tings sets the mood with rolling breaks in a sea of soothing pads, subtle loops, vocal samples, and recurring sound effects anchored by deep bass to create a subtle, implied tension. Mutation Experts makes use of a catchy melody to take the listener along and once again the mood is one of subtle changes and blissful exploration, a junglist daydream. Ruff Times is the darker of the tracks on offer, a creeping roller wrapped around a two-note melody and drenched in dub, a hypnotic descent down a rabbit hole. The EP closes with Positive Yourself a mellow, downtempo production that plays with African motifs and samples for a gentle return to reality.

Mutation Experts offers a perfect example of how Moresounds combines the rhythmic appeal of jungle with the transformative potential of dub, sidestepping obvious signifiers to play with possibilities. Mutation Experts invites you to take a different trip with Moresounds as your guide.
