Multi-Instrumentalist/Producer ZO! from the wonderful FOREIGN EXCHANGE family is Detroit-area born and raised, LORENZO FERGUSON. 

Influenced by a wide range of music genres introduced to him at an early age, ZO! utilizes multiple layers of thick instrumentation to shape his compositions, as demonstrated on his solo albums namely, MANMADE, SUNSTORM and his superb latest offering SKYBREAK.

Reel People are back. Back to their roots. Back to the future. Back with a bang. Eagerly awaited new album Retroflection sees the revered collective recreating 12 soul, disco and boogie classics pivotal to their formation nearly 20 years ago and subsequent hugely successful evolution. Band leader Oli Lazarus has gathered a stellar cast of musicians and singers, – the likes of Angie Stone, Mica Paris, Omar, Tony Momrelle, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, LaSharVu and Sharlene Hector breathing fresh and irresistible life into seminal grooves by Maze, Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Teena Marie among others.

Mica Paris opens proceedings, her powerful take on Alicia Myers’ gospel-R&B jam I Want To Thank You an impressive herald for what’s to come – authenticity, contemporary edge, rich musicianship, beating soulful heart. Angie Stone provides sass ‘n’ slink over signature low-end synths for a suitably raw re-tooling of Yarbrough & People’s 1980 hit Don’t Stop The Music, whilst the funky strut of Thinking About Your Love (a crisper, more urgent update of Skipworth & Turner) perfectly complements Omar’s expansive, one-in-a-million vocals. Elsewhere, Reel People regular Tony Momrelle revisits Carl Anderson’s mid-Eighties gem Buttercup (penned by Stevie Wonder) with considerable finesse as well as Bill Withers’ seriously underrated collabo with guitarist Jose Feliciano, Can We Pretend.

Basement Jaxx songstress Sharlene Hector uplifts on a sparkling new version of Side Effect’s Always There. Reel People’s sweet summer hook-ups with Baltimore chanteuse Navasha Dava are also present and correct – I’m In Love and Can’t Fake The Feeling pay affectionate tribute to Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Geraldine Hunt respectively at the same time as showcasing Daya’s sublime, jazz-flecked delivery. There’s still room for Anthony David’s luscious rendition of deep-soul bomb Keep It Up (originally by Milton Wright) and for LaSharVu – a white-hot amalgam of Hector and fellow female powerhouses Vulu Malinga and LaDonna Harley-Peters – to smartly re-dress Teena Marie joint I Need Your Lovin’. Sleek instrumental twists on Maze’s Twilight and Pleasure’s Joyous complete the incredible line-up.

Reel People’s first full studio album in 10 years (following acclaimed releases Second Guess and Seven Ways To Wonder, as well as compilation work including Golden Lady), Retroflection reflects the highest possible level of passion and polish. Such soulful devotion and craftmanship has ever been a Reel People hallmark. Recorded in London and Atlanta over an intense 12-month period, Retroflection also avoids the formulaic overload of modern beats and basslines that countless others pursue. Here the past is artfully reawakened, Reel People’s talented cast of performers – overseen by experienced studio-hands Lazarus, Mike Patto, Matt Cooper (of Incognito fame) and Toni Economides - re-treading classic riffs with new yet respectful purpose. Sydney space funk trio, The Goods, are Badmandela, Rosario & Black Tree. With the help of some friends, The Goods capture the energy of jamming and improvisation to create music that transports the listeners to a moment in time shared together on their new album 'II'. 

Musically and lyrically ‘II’ is about living in the moment. Each track harnesses the mood or vibration in the room at the time of its inception. The album features 20019's breakaway hit “Let’s Roll” featuring Touch Sensitive (Future Classic), a reminder that mood is about choice...if happiness is a state of mind then why not chose it? “Last Chance” is an invitation to take life by the horns because, in these uncertain times, one can’t take anything for granted. “Voodoo” is that one flame, whose flaws you overlook because they got the mojo while “Walking On Fire” is a nod to band's 80s heroes mixing the likes of Luther, D-Train, and Jam with a future club feel. "Peach" is an anthem for sexual liberation & at the same time being a cheeky funk jam. “Shots”, the album single was born at a jam at Touch Sensitive’s studio - Disco J rocks up a drum loop and turns it into a party! The Beastie Boys meets Marvin Gaye meet Anderson Paak in “Cassandra” resulting from a hang with The Goods’ friend Elliot Hammond of well known Australian band The Delta Riggs, while “Tell Me” is a sexy late night joint for those nights on the prowl. “Che Boog” is an ode to the sleazy funk of Parliament, Funkadelic and Prince , and lastly the Black Mirror inspired “Supersonic” is a tale from a time-travelling consciousness stuck in a dystopian 2020. 

Fueled by their mutual love of hip hop & house music and its intersection with the soul, boogie and jazz they grew up on, producers and multi instrumentalists Badmandela (Jarrol Renaud) & Rosario (Ross Ferraro) formed The Goods and released their self-titled album in 2016, drawing on their wealth of experience as producers and session musicians, having cut their teeth with artists the likes of Mac Miller, Charli XCX, Sampa The Great, Omar, and more. The album attracted the attention of and ultimate signing to Bastard Jazz (NYC) and led to the addition of talented vocalist Black Tree (Adele, Ngaiire, Taku + Wafia). In 2017, they released their runaway single 'Make Your Move' which garnered radio support from Triple J and Fbi, with the accompanying video featured on Rage as 'Wild One' of the week. The 2018 EP of the same name yielded the break-out streaming hit ‘Glow’ and solidified the band’s position as the foremost act in Sydney’s emerging electronic soul scene.

Following the release of ‘Happy Song’, the first single from forthcoming album ‘Break The Wall’, MF Robots reveal the full extended version of the song alongside remixes from Kenny Dope, Kaidi Tatham and Daz-I-Kue.

It’s only right that Kenny Dope should be the first producer to remix Jan Kincaid and Dawn Joseph’s new MF Robots project, considering the trio’s shared musical history. Kenny Dope began reworking Jan’s ‘Brand New Heavies’ material back in the early 90’s as one half of Masters At Work, helping the band reach club-land over and over again with a series of iconic remixes, recorded during the golden era of MAW’s output.

It’s no surprise then that there’s more than a hint of that special, Latin sunshine-infused mid-90’s House sound in Kenny’s rework of Happy Song, which showcases Dawn’s impeccable vocals over an infectious rhythm track and ultra-funky horn stabs. An instrumental version of Kenny’s mix is also included for the House purists, as well as the full, extended original version of Happy Song, packed with tight musicianship and more than its fair share of great grooves.

Pioneers of the UK Broken Beat movement and contributors to its most emblematic group, Bugz In The Attic, it seems almost inconceivable that Kaidi Tatham & Daz-I-Kue have never actually worked on a remix together before. As strange as it may sound, it’s true, and their powerhouse rework of ‘Happy Song’ is most definitely worth the wait.

About MF Robots:

Meeting in 2013 while recording and performing with one of the UK’s most commercially successful Acid Jazz bands, legendary UK drummer Jan Kincaid and vocalist Dawn Joseph discovered immediate musical chemistry and began writing songs together right away. They soon left the band to concentrate on their own work, starting MF Robots (Music For Robots) and releasing an eponymous debut in 2018. The album was so well received that the duo soon morphed into a band as they found themselves in-demand at venues and festivals all over Europe.

Forthcoming long player ‘Break The Wall’ represents a new benchmark for Jan and Dawn, reflecting the MF Robots project coalescing and maturing while fine-tuning their material, both on the road and in the studio.

Transatlantic duo Sons of the Sun make their BBE debut with warm and soulful hip hop single ‘Underwater Dreaming,’ taken from their forthcoming self-titled album.

A tender, sensual celebration of connection and desire, ‘Underwater Dreaming’ evokes the sounds of contemporary R&B, fused with Southeast London’s signature jazz vibes. Their unique aesthetic stands out- the entire album is recorded with honest, organic musicianship, an homage to the much loved old skool sample sound, reflected back through multi-instrumentation. Sons of the Sun is a collaboration between American singer-songwriter JTronius and British producer Maverick Quest, featuring an inspired selection of luminary guests and musicians. Delivered remotely following a chance meeting on music-tech networking app ‘Brapp’, the ingenious pair sent files back and forth between Texas andSouth East London to create their shared vision for the project. Remarkably, the duo have yet to meet in person.

A respected solo artist knighted by Bootsy Collins as an official ‘funkateer,’ Berklee College graduate JTronius is an extravagant entertainer, songwriter and entrepreneur. Self-dubbed The Guvna of the Galaxy, he brings his swaggy, soulful style to all his endeavours. He has shared stages with LL Cool J, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Pharrell, Busta Rhymes and Damian Marley and is an accomplished actor, appearing in a number of successful Hollywood feature films.

Genre-blending record producer and multi-instrumentalist Maverick Quest is a coveted artist with 20 years of experience in the music industry. He grew up immersed in the aesthetic of hip hop, but in an environment where flipping loops from vinyl was standard, developing his musicianship to create his own sounds was radical, a move that paved the way for his signature sonic. Maverick Quest has previously performed with and produced for Guru, Grandmaster Flash, Ice T, Ibibio Sound Machine, Solo Rosa and Portico Quartet to name but a few and is firmly rooted in the epicentre of the burgeoning South East London jazz movement.

Mixed by Grammy-nominated Clinton “Ubiquity” McCreery and mastered at Grammy-awarded studio The Carvery, ‘Underwater Dreaming’ features celebrated musicians such as Scottish Group ‘The Brass Cats’, Washington DC’s Reginald Payne (aka Bass Negus), with Philly neo-soul stalwart and Lauryn Hill, Bilal collaborator Dai Miyazaki. Accompanied by an official video by Nathalie Gordon, the debut single ‘Underwater Dreaming’ from Sons of the Sun offers an enticing first taste of what’s to come from this exciting new musical partnership.
