To celebrate Late Night Tales providing the pre-movie warm up music selection on Saturday 9th August at Film4's outdoor Summer Screen event at the historic Somerset House, we give you a very special soundtrack mix to enjoy.

The soundtrack composer is the modern era’s equivalent to the great classical writers of the 18th and 19th centuries. These days, our Chopins and Mozarts are musicians like John Williams, Thomas Newman or Ennio Morricone and their arena is not the opera house but the movie theatre. The advent of the talking picture in 1927 revolutionised entertainment and condemned the stars of the silent era to swift unemployment. It’s no coincidence that the first great movie of the talkie age was Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, in which music was its central focus. 

A good soundtrack can lend even the most mediocre movie a celestial quality, elevate it beyond the streets, houses, people and dialogue; it gives it that ethereal quality that separates the moving picture from real life. Even the most gritty subject matter is a form of escapism and that, after all, is why the movie is one of the 20th century’s greatest cultural gifts. - Bill Brewster

Late Night Tales - At The Movies (Somerset House 2014 OST Mix)

This edit is inspired by a Hacienda mix from August 1989 in Manchester which has Carly Simon's 'Why' with a civil rights speech over the top. Pretty sure it's Martin Luther King, although it isn't the 'I have a dream' speech I've used here. This is an update, with massive thanks to the Project Tempo guys for the permission and the inspiration.
