Mystry Boiler Room London DJ Set

For some, Mystry’s sudden, explosive breakthrough at the business end of 2014 might have come as a bit of a surprise. A DJ and producer from Birmingham - one who’d cut his teeth on the airwaves of legendary city-centre radio station Silk City - his early work was well received in the Midlands, but it lacked the momentum to make its way to London, for so long the stumbling block for artists hailing from further afield. Things would soon change though - and Mystry would never look back.

As a beat-maker who also shares a similar background to more established Birmingham producers like Swifta Beater and TRC, his initial break came in 2013 when he signed an EP to Spyro’s Dragon Punch imprint, although it was the story of ‘Pulse 8’ that would change Mystry’s trajectory for good. Remixing Youngstar’s seminal grime anthem ‘Pulse X’ is nothing new to contemporary producers – a lot of people have tried their hand at it over the years - but Mystry’s edit connected in a way that few others ever have. It’s dark, nasty and rasping - a track with enough fire in its belly to have MCs clawing to get their hands on it, but enough bite to turn clubs over by itself. The real acid test? Boy Better Know rolling it out as a dub in their Red Bull Culture Clash performance in 2014, a moment he recalls as one of the proudest of his career.

With the touch paper now well and truly lit, Mystry quickly signed his debut EP proper to Stripes Records earlier this year and the rest, as they say, is history. Now chilling with the artists he dreamed of working with, we caught up with him to take stock of his journey so far...

Havin' crossed paths many times over the years, in clubs and at festivals, and mutually admired each other's destructive potential in the dance, D Double E, and The Bug had spoken for time, about a killer collab, and 'Box' is  truly that. 
Written specifically for Double, by the Bugman, to amplify the mc's warp factor flow, the producer propels his trademark weight with an off kilter swing. Result is an unusually catchy dancefloor banger, that heads resolutely back to the club, after the moody narrative detours of 'Angels & Devils'.
Meanwhile, 'Iceman' has already been heralded as the new "Skeng', by the many djs who have already dropped it on dubplate. From Mala, to Mary Ann Hobbs, via Rodigan, Logan Sama and Kode 9, its already left massive floor craters prior to release.  Its the sound of yardie badman Riko gettin low down and dirty on a seriously nasty Bug riddim. A monster.
Having finally hooked up with two of the most singular voices in grime, this EP marks the beginning of more lethal collabs to follow, with the finest filthmasters, the UK has to offer on the mic. 'Box/Iceman' signifies The Bug's intent to indelibly mash up the dance again and again.
