Tedsmooth Tribute Mix 2013

In 2012, some friends of mine on Facebook and Twitter made me aware of an “Old School DJ contest” being held by syndicated radio host Michael Baisden.   The finalists were going to be flown to Dallas to compete live for a winner-take-all contest for a cash prize and to be the DJ for his birthday party.  I wound up missing the entry deadline but listened to some of the mix entries as he played them live on his show.  I’m not big on downing other DJs but going strictly based on what I heard, I kicked myself for not being more timely in my submissions. The rules, as simple as they sound, provided a bit of a creative challenge.  There were to be 3 separate 10-minute mixes of old-school: house, R&B, hip-hop, etc.  I really do have a “lotta damn records” so the challenge for me was to be able to select and weave a handful of REALLY GOOD songs within a 10 minute span (10 minutes goes by QUICKLY!) showcasing my DJ skills/personality with minimal-to-no scratching, absolutely no DJ drops and absolutely no talking on the microphone.   Basically, they wanted to hear that you can actually DJ without the benefit of technology.  I’ve been DJing for over 2 decades – before the technology so it made it a fun project for me and evened out the score if this was to be judged fairly. Now in 2013, I’m being made aware again that Baisden is having this contest – and I’m being told that I more or less “better” enter this year because they know I can win this.   Adding that battery to my back and coming off missing out last year, I try to knock it out the park.  I did my 3 mixes all in one night.  No more than 2 takes on any one of them.  I’m feeling VERY confident that I will get a callback.  Except…..Baisden’s show gets canceled the other week!!  *cue up The Price Is Right Loser music* Ah well, so much for that!  But as a measure of thanks, I wanted to share the SECOND mix I completed with those of you who have and continue to support me.  I don’t DJ for a living or for fame, I do it purely for the art and the love and the history. While growing up in New Jersey, DJ Soto found out at an early age that his passion was music. Ever since he can remember, music has been an enormous part of his life. Whether that was listening to music at home or playing the drums in both his middle school’s and high school’s marching and concert bands, music has always had a huge influence on him. DJ Soto spent months not knowing what to do with his life as far as music was concerned, until one day while looking at videos on YouTube he ran into some videos by a few DJ’s from New York. These DJ’s included DJ Camilo, Alex Sensation, DJ Enuff, and DJ Mad. Seeing these videos inspired him to follow in their footsteps and make a career out of DJing. After hours of learning about the craft, teaching himself how to beat match, blend, scratch, etc., and studying the videos made by popular New York DJs, he felt that he was ready to introduce himself to the world as DJ SOTO. Being a Latin DJ, he took it upon himself to not only play all of the best Latin music such as Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Reggaeton but to also play the very best of Hip Hop, Reggae, Club, and House music. With this, DJ Soto aims to be the most diverse DJ that has ever hit the club scene and to this day he continues to grow and develop into a well rounded DJ. Staying true to his New Jersey roots, DJ Soto always makes sure to represent where he’s from and shows love and support to some of the hottest DJs New Jersey has to offer, such as DJ Mad, David S, DJ Frikkiao, DJ Infamous and all of the DJ Kings family. With his continuing hard work ethic and desire to make a name for himself, DJ Soto plans on being one of the helping factors in making New Jersey one of the best in the club scene along side NYC. Day to day DJ Soto continues to grow and develop his skills with hopes of one day being one of the hottest DJs in NJ as well as being “THE TRI STATES’ BEST”.
