SILICON OVERMIND is a series of contemporary mixes exploring the many permutations of psychedelic techno, loosely centered on the sound of Techgnosis Records. Every mix is crafted with my broad definition of "psychedelic techno" in mind, curating material from far beyond the traditional borders of the style. These mixes are generally under three hours in length.

Basilisk is a veteran DJ, label owner, and music publisher from Canada now residing in Taiwan. Widely known for his tireless efforts to champion netlabel content through the Ektoplazm distribution portal, he also dedicates himself to mastery of the mixing arts. Here he turns his attention to the vast catalogue of gleaming gems released by Digital Diamonds (@digital-diamonds-netlabel), a pioneering label he has proudly supported since its inception in 2006. This is my DJ edit of the Eitan Reiter (@eitanreiter) remix of Psika by Dusty Kid (@dusty-little-kid) released on Digital Structures (@digital-structures). The original was a mainstay of my sets in the late 2000s so I'm happy to have a new version to play out.

I rearranged the structure of the song, placing the middle sequence first, restored some elements of the original track released in 2007 (including that big bass-heavy breakdown), applied some effects to mask transitions, and made the lead-out a little more DJ-friendly.

DJ Basilisk captures the halcyon morning sound of outdoor festival season with ESOTERIC EXPANSE 2, an extended four hour mix rooted in the deeper end of progressive psytrance. Expect a playful and free-spirited blend of styles featuring several permutations of progressive house, dream trance, and dub techno, with just enough midtempo breakbeat and spaced-out ambient to provide a sublime introduction and soft landing. DJ Basilisk also delivers on the promise of harmonic mixing with smooth transitions, seamlessly layering rhythm and melody to obscure where one track ends and the next begins. Prepare to kick up some dust and bask in the warmth of the rising sun as the story unfolds!

This mix is dedicated to everyone around the world missing out on festival season throughout these pandemic years. Hopefully we'll all be together again soon! ■ 請介紹對你的音樂風格影響最大的人事物。
□ 我的音樂根源是上世紀 90 年代的 Psytrance 場景，因此我最早的影響來自 Koxbox、The Infinity Project、 Astral Projection 與 Man With No Name。至於 Techno 與 House，我最早是在 2000 年代晚期在多倫多受 Noah Pred 的影響，不久後還去底特律的 Movement Electronic Music Festival 朝聖。

□ 這是個混合多種 Techno 類型的史詩旅程，但主要焦點是來自廠牌「Techgnosis Records」的 Psychedelic Techno，我在 2015 年與 Ben Rama 共同創立了這個廠牌。Psychedelic Techno 是 Psychedelic Trance 與 Techno 的混合體，黑暗而充滿未來感，聲響新潮且為舞池而生。在台灣放這個類型的 DJ 並不多，所以我覺得能與這裡的愛樂同好們分享它會很有趣，但當然也想藉此找到原本就知道這個類型的同好。
■ 你的 DJ 名「Basilisk」指的是一種有毒的奇幻生物，請問為何會用這個字呢？
□ 與 Basilisk 相關的傳說很多，但最經典的說法是把牠描述成巨大的蜥蜴，擁有能將人類石化的魔咒凝視。選這個字當 DJ 名說來有點諷刺，因為身為 DJ 我們的目標剛好相反，是要讓舞客在舞池中狂舞。所以我並非想讓舞客變成石頭，而是用音樂讓舞客感覺被”Stoned”。
■ 你住在台灣多久了？為何會想待在台灣？
□ 從 2013 年起我就經常造訪台灣，但直到近年才決定待下來。這裡的日常生活真的很方便，擁有世界級的捷運，人民友善好客。我生性好奇，對台灣的歷史、文化與地理有無止盡的求知慾，這裡也總讓我感到興味盎然。台灣的地下電音場景充滿潛力，我希望未來能在這裡多貢獻一份心力。
■ 你有很多關於台灣廢墟的攝影作品，它們不但特別也很有名。為何你會想專注在這個主題上？
□ 除了遺跡與廢墟的視覺美學外，廢棄場所能向我們透露社會經濟的貧富發展軌跡，這讓我很著迷。我有一個這方面的計畫，是著眼在台灣的老戲院。每個戲院都附著了它周邊社群的故事，有些故事精彩無比。舉例來說，台東縣有許多戲院出現在橫貫公路建設期間，由政府的建設計畫帶來許多老兵之後。當這些建設計畫大功告成，居民離開，這些戲院就被棄置了。我經營了主題部落格「Spectral Codex」，與大家分享這些點滴。
■ 對你來說音樂是什麼？
□ 音樂有重塑意識的力量，它能將你傳送到世界的各個角落。我把自己視為領航員，在聲音的海洋上繪製出航行圖，帶領舞客進入前往遙遠異國的奇幻之旅

DJ Basilisk ranges widely on SILICON OVERMIND 2, the second edition of a mix series exploring the many permutations of psychedelic techno and beyond. Embark upon a grand tour of many different moods and styles, from midtempo breaks and dub techno to minimal and progressive psytrance. This study in contrasts showcases Basilisk's smooth and harmonic mixing style as well as several tracks from Techgnosis Records, the psychedelic techno label he co-founded alongside Ben Rama in 2015. Ultimately the aim is to induce a hypnotic and, at times, euphoric effect, always with an ear for the transformative power of sound!

An extensive edit of a Kris Needs remix of Bob & Ian's "Purpuss", originally released on Vivatonal in 1993. I cut all of the more rave-oriented elements and kept all the hypnotic, Goa trance-adjacent parts, adding drum and atmosphere fills and re-arranging the breakdown, intro, and outro to make it easier to mix. Kept all those cat yowls and bass-heavy purring though 😻

Purpuss Edit (1993)

Basilisk explores the secret origins of the modern psychedelic techno movement on TRANSMISSIONS FROM HYPERBOREA. This mix is a cross-genre period piece set in the transitional year of 2010, when tech house, neotrance, minimal techno, and progressive psytrance collided and merged to form something vibrant and new. It was an era marked by the infiltration of underground club culture into the open air psytrance festival circuit; dance floors were awash in white noise, rapt with sizzling electric leads, and worked into a frenzy by big swinging beats. Basilisk's growing involvement in this emerging fusion was formalized by the establishment of Drumlore, a Canadian netlabel and event series organized alongside DJ Lexicon, in 2009. This, in turn, lay the groundwork for Techgnosis Records, one of the leading psychedelic techno labels of the 2020s. And so this mix also asks: what is a movement without history? Where do we find our roots?

Plenty of the tracks featured in this mix are now unavailable, deleted from whatever digital download platform originally carried them, sometimes nearly vanishing without a trace. Others are old dance floor stalwarts you will almost certainly recognize if you were raving back in 2010.

Transmissions From Hyperborea [Psychedelic Techno / Progressive House / Minimal Techno / Neotrance]

INTANGIBLE FRONTIERS 3 originally premiered as RESILIENCE on Psybient.org Podcast 44 (@gagarinproject). My intention with this guest mix for Psybient.org is two-fold: to expand the horizons of what we consider "psychedelic downtempo" by exploring a wide range of adjacent and compatible styles of electronic music; and to demonstrate advanced mixing techniques in a chill out set, where many DJs just make brief transitions between tracks.

This mix contains multitudes: ambient and modular dreamscapes, bucolic IDM and futuristic electro breaks, quirky nu-disco workouts, deep and organic house and trance, bubbling acid experiments, shimmering slabs of dub techno, and more than a few references to the origins of psychedelic trance culture on the beaches of South and Southeast Asia. A careful selection of harmonically compatible source material allows for long, layered transitions, sometimes with three or four tracks playing simultaneously. Ideally this creates a sort of auditory illusion where tracks meld together and time collapses, making it effortless to lose yourself in this musical microcosm. Finally, on an emotional level, this mix is often more hopeful and perhaps even inspirational, though it is not without melancholy and sadness at times, a reflection of the global zeitgeist.

Basilisk returns with TRANSMISSIONS FROM ARCADIA, a 4-hour odyssey into deep and progressive forms of house, techno, and trance embedded within a hazy cocoon of broken beats, IDM, downtempo, and ambient, all from around the turn of the millennium. This exercise in genre-fluid nostalgia emphasizes rhythm over melody, avoiding monotony by rotating between diverse yet complimentary sounds intended for the dirty warehouse, summer festival, upscale club, or smoke-filled lounge.

Rave nostalgia is alive and well these days, but most people lavish their attention on the primordial aesthetics and waveforms of the early 1990s. Far less critical attention has been directed on the diversifying sounds of the early 2000s, when digital workstations transformed electronic music production and new movements proliferated throughout global dance culture. This mix aims to connect some of the dots, bridging gaps between contemporaneous scenes that might not have seen much crossover when this music was gleaming and new.

Basilisk embarks on another epic mission into the outer reaches of sound with ESOTERIC EXPANSE 4, 76 tracks and nearly five hours of cutting edge techno, psytrance, electro, downtempo, and ambient. The fourth chapter of the Expanse Cycle spans a vast spectrum of contemporary electronic music styles unified by an emphasis on sleek and futuristic atmospheres, slow-burning builds, and taciturn tendencies. DJ Basilisk channels subliminal signals from the electronic noosphere on SILICON OVERMIND 5, the latest edition of his signature psychedelic techno mix series. On this outing we are treated to an expert blend of deep, dubby, and psychedelic techno bleeding into minimal and progressive psytrance, with five selections apiece from both Digital Diamonds and Techgnosis Records. This mix is an experiment in running the tape backwards, moving from light into darkness and back again, carrying the listener through inner worlds of thought and sensation. Subtle transitions and attention to harmonic theory create an illusion of seemingly endless evolution, as one track vanishes into the next in a dreamy, formless haze, while slow and deliberate tension-building invariably leads to cathartic release.

Ultimately the aim is to capture some of the magic of the outdoor festival experience circa 1996, particularly in the UK and continental Europe. Clocking in at two and a half hours in length, this highly polished exercise in ritual machine music mainly draws from the hazy hinterlands of techno, with only around a dozen selections from the outer periphery of psychedelic trance culture. While the focus of this mix is mainly on the more minimalistic side of things, the last third of the mix is dreamy and transcendent, providing a sense of catharsis after the long journey through darkness.

Transmissions From Shambhala [Goa Trance 1994–1996]

Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. Since many of my earliest memories of partying in Toronto were formed at events thrown by the Moonshadow collective I decided to dedicate this mix to DJ Dam, Cyber G, Yohimbe, John Dee, and everyone else who was there in the beginning.

Moonshadow [Dark Psytrance / Goa Trance Circa 1999]

In Exile is a special mix composed by Basilisk for Global Goa Party 2, a virtual party organized by Marsh at the Goat Ranch, a flashpoint for old school Goa trance fandom. The concept is simple enough: gather up a bunch of seasoned old school veterans and have them mix up a full night of music just as if it were some point in the not-so-distant past. The first event—for which I produced Moonshadow—landed us 1999.

This time we travel back to the year 1996, smack dab in the middle of the Golden Age of Goa trance. Bill Clinton is in the White House, Boris Yeltsin is in the Kremlin, the reigning human chess champion is defeated by a computer for the first time, and tantalizing evidence of life on other worlds captures headlines around the world. I am merely 15 years old, not yet fully initiated into the world of psychedelic trance, although the groundwork is already laid by my adolescent fascination with industrial music, cyberpunk fiction, and early dial-up BBSes. One of the aims of the Global Goa Party project is to provide an experience for those of us who did not have the good fortune to attend psytrance parties back in the day—myself included! (I first heard DJ Nivoc play Goa trance in April of 1996 but had no idea what was going on at the time.) For the 2:00am to 3:30am time slot I did my best to build from a hypnotizing introduction to a seething, storming climax, taking care to end on a high note.

This set was recorded live at All Stars 2011, a festival held near Fenelon Falls, Ontario, on August 28th, 2011. My time slot was in the late morning, sometime close to noon, and there was a curious haze all around, for we were situated beneath the outflow clouds of the deadly but distant Hurricane Irene. Unscripted as always, the set unfolded with a sublime blend of dreamy psychedelic techno and progressive trance.

All Stars 2011 [Psychedelic Techno / Progressive House / Progressive Trance]

DJ Basilisk emerges from a long period of esoteric theorizing, conceptual regeneration, and diligent crate-digging to present Hermetic Expanse, a five-hour odyssey into hypnotic realms of underground electronic music. Originally conceived as a vehicle for showcasing the sound of Techgnosis Records (@techgnosis-records), the label he co-founded alongside Ben Rama (@benramamusic) in 2015, this mix features ten of his personal favorites from the label's burgeoning catalog. Situating the Techgnosis vibe in a wider context, this mix also features numerous selections from Digital Diamonds, Digital Structures, Horns and Hoofs Entertainment, Anarkick Records, IbogaTech, Boshke Beats, Zenon Records, and other fellow travellers of the psychedelic techno and minimal psytrance movements. The central core of the mix, a three-hour dance floor workout, was released as Techgnosis Sessions 024, but this full-length and uncut version features an additional two hours of melancholic electro, intricate and effusive IDM, experimental breakbeat techno, and dark ambient.

Basilisk is a veteran multi-genre DJ, co-founder of the psychedelic techno label @Techgnosis-Records alongside @benramamusic, founder of the iconic @Ektoplazm free music portal and label group (including Ektoplazm, Drumlore, and Omnitropic), lossless audio enthusiast, and dedicated archivist and electronic music curator. Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, he is now based in Taipei, Taiwan.

Psytrance, techno, electro, house, trance, acid, breaks, bass, IDM, ambient—you name it, I probably spin it. My mixes fluidly combine different genres into harmonic journeys that defy convention.
