Intangible Frontiers: Deeper Journeys Across the Boundaries Between Genres

INTANGIBLE FRONTIERS 3 originally premiered as RESILIENCE on Psybient.org Podcast 44 (@gagarinproject). My intention with this guest mix for Psybient.org is two-fold: to expand the horizons of what we consider "psychedelic downtempo" by exploring a wide range of adjacent and compatible styles of electronic music; and to demonstrate advanced mixing techniques in a chill out set, where many DJs just make brief transitions between tracks.

This mix contains multitudes: ambient and modular dreamscapes, bucolic IDM and futuristic electro breaks, quirky nu-disco workouts, deep and organic house and trance, bubbling acid experiments, shimmering slabs of dub techno, and more than a few references to the origins of psychedelic trance culture on the beaches of South and Southeast Asia. A careful selection of harmonically compatible source material allows for long, layered transitions, sometimes with three or four tracks playing simultaneously. Ideally this creates a sort of auditory illusion where tracks meld together and time collapses, making it effortless to lose yourself in this musical microcosm. Finally, on an emotional level, this mix is often more hopeful and perhaps even inspirational, though it is not without melancholy and sadness at times, a reflection of the global zeitgeist.

Basilisk channels a sense of curiosity, wanderlust, and transcendence on INTANGIBLE FRONTIERS 1, the first in a new mix series dedicated to sonic world-building at the deeper end of the electronic music spectrum. Rather than focus on one specific genre, this mix explores the borderlands of style, where music cultures meet, interface, and exchange ideas. Gathering source material from across these intangible frontiers, Basilisk smoothly blends dark disco, cosmic house, progressive trance, dub techno, midtempo breaks, electro, and new age ambient, always with a dreamy, psychedelic touch. The resulting two hour mix is a complete journey into sound, promising transportation to distant realms of the imagination and back again.

Basilisk is a veteran multi-genre DJ, co-founder of the psychedelic techno label @Techgnosis-Records alongside @benramamusic, founder of the iconic @Ektoplazm free music portal and label group (including Ektoplazm, Drumlore, and Omnitropic), lossless audio enthusiast, and dedicated archivist and electronic music curator. Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, he is now based in Taipei, Taiwan.

Psytrance, techno, electro, house, trance, acid, breaks, bass, IDM, ambient—you name it, I probably spin it. My mixes fluidly combine different genres into harmonic journeys that defy convention.
