Conceived by our dearest friend, Toufie, the project delves into the human psyche and emotions alike. Bio:
Tadik is a Persian delicacy. Its something the family will fight over at the dinner table as there's never enough to go around. It's the most irresistible part of a daily ritual such as family dinner and in this, the most simple reminder of what makes us human. Aggression is also kindness. Darkness is also warm. Loss often means the absence of something you desire right through to your heritage. As crusty rice will tell you, beauty is not always so apparent at first sight, sometimes you have to experience it to realise why it belongs in your life forever.

Basilisk returns with TRANSMISSIONS FROM ARCADIA, a 4-hour odyssey into deep and progressive forms of house, techno, and trance embedded within a hazy cocoon of broken beats, IDM, downtempo, and ambient, all from around the turn of the millennium. This exercise in genre-fluid nostalgia emphasizes rhythm over melody, avoiding monotony by rotating between diverse yet complimentary sounds intended for the dirty warehouse, summer festival, upscale club, or smoke-filled lounge.

Rave nostalgia is alive and well these days, but most people lavish their attention on the primordial aesthetics and waveforms of the early 1990s. Far less critical attention has been directed on the diversifying sounds of the early 2000s, when digital workstations transformed electronic music production and new movements proliferated throughout global dance culture. This mix aims to connect some of the dots, bridging gaps between contemporaneous scenes that might not have seen much crossover when this music was gleaming and new.

This Lost Minute features NAGA. Naga started out DJing in '94 as the first delicate waves of Budapest based rave culture became surfable. In his long decades in electronics he also contributed to Tilos Radio and Chi-recordings, but his collaborations with DJ friends had the most remarkable effect on the local music scene. With Beta he co-founded Hairy Records, and their House2house has been a regular night since then. With Peter Bernath they formed a gig series called 'Lost Minute' presenting innumerable guests from the worldwide house-under scene like Ada Kaleh, Anton Kubikov, Christopher Ledger, Delano Smith, John Dimas, Vid, among others. Their yearly b2b sets at Ozora has always been a slow mounting to inner highs - presented with much care and concentration -, and also a nice occasion for a hypnotic gathering.

This set was recorded live at Re:Generate, the name chosen by the Om Reunion Project to set the mood for their summer solstice gathering in 2011. I was scheduled to play on Sunday morning at the Moon Bass stage, a great little setup in a forest clearing on a beautiful piece of land in Southern Ontario. It felt like the right space and time to take a trip into the history of the psychedelic trance subculture so I mixed up a diverse assortment of old school Goa trance classics after sunrise. As always, this set was completely improvised; absolutely nothing was planned prior to stepping on stage to ready my equipment. This musical experience was co-created with a fantastic crowd of people who emerged from the woods to dance with enthusiasm to these old school gems.

Circadian Rhythms is a meditation on the passage of time and an exercise in musical archeology. Mixing live on four decks, Basilisk skillfully blends some of the finest mid-tempo Goa trance classics of the 1990s with dub techno, deep trance, progressive house, psychedelic breakbeats. Holding steady at or around 120 beats per minute, the deep frequencies of this mix evoke the heartbeat of creation, taking the listener on a full journey through day into night and back again.

Circadian Rhythms [Midtempo Goa Trance Classics From the 1990s]

Moonshadow is a classic psytrance mix originally composed for the Global Goa Party, a virtual event conceived to “create the soundtrack for a full night (and morning) of old-school Goa trance by ten DJs from all over the world.” The rules were simple: record a mix with music that would have been heard on the dance floor in 1999. I snapped up the 12:30 to 2:00am time slot and spent weeks scouring my collection for the right stuff to hasten the journey into darkness and lunacy. Naturally, this exercise aroused great nostalgia for my own initiation into psytrance culture sometime in 1997 or 1998. Since many of my earliest memories of partying in Toronto were formed at events thrown by the Moonshadow collective I decided to dedicate this mix to DJ Dam, Cyber G, Yohimbe, John Dee, and everyone else who was there in the beginning.

Moonshadow [Dark Psytrance / Goa Trance Circa 1999]

In Exile is a special mix composed by Basilisk for Global Goa Party 2, a virtual party organized by Marsh at the Goat Ranch, a flashpoint for old school Goa trance fandom. The concept is simple enough: gather up a bunch of seasoned old school veterans and have them mix up a full night of music just as if it were some point in the not-so-distant past. The first event—for which I produced Moonshadow—landed us 1999.

This time we travel back to the year 1996, smack dab in the middle of the Golden Age of Goa trance. Bill Clinton is in the White House, Boris Yeltsin is in the Kremlin, the reigning human chess champion is defeated by a computer for the first time, and tantalizing evidence of life on other worlds captures headlines around the world. I am merely 15 years old, not yet fully initiated into the world of psychedelic trance, although the groundwork is already laid by my adolescent fascination with industrial music, cyberpunk fiction, and early dial-up BBSes. One of the aims of the Global Goa Party project is to provide an experience for those of us who did not have the good fortune to attend psytrance parties back in the day—myself included! (I first heard DJ Nivoc play Goa trance in April of 1996 but had no idea what was going on at the time.) For the 2:00am to 3:30am time slot I did my best to build from a hypnotizing introduction to a seething, storming climax, taking care to end on a high note.

Blacklight Metropolis is Basilisk’s contribution to the fifth edition of Global Goa Party, a virtual event organized by Marsh at the Goatranch to simulate an entire night of music from the early years of the psychedelic trance movement. This time around the year is 1997 and the golden age of Goa trance is in full swing, blasting revellers into limitless dimensions of sound with scintillating kaleidoscopic sounds and twisted techno-shamanistic rhythms. Basilisk is a veteran multi-genre DJ, co-founder of the psychedelic techno label @Techgnosis-Records alongside @benramamusic, founder of the iconic @Ektoplazm free music portal and label group (including Ektoplazm, Drumlore, and Omnitropic), lossless audio enthusiast, and dedicated archivist and electronic music curator. Originally hailing from Toronto, Canada, he is now based in Taipei, Taiwan.

Psytrance, techno, electro, house, trance, acid, breaks, bass, IDM, ambient—you name it, I probably spin it. My mixes fluidly combine different genres into harmonic journeys that defy convention.
