With techno originally hailed as The House Sound of Detroit - there’s no denying the motor city has its own definitive genre: Ghetto Tech. A true pioneer of the sound, DJ Godfather, like so many in Detroit was inspired by local radio - WJLB, The Electrifying Mojo and Jeff ‘The Wizard’ Mills - but for Brian Jeffries, aka DJ Godfather, it was scratch DJs, hip hop and DMC battles that kick-started his love for turntablism.

Playing house parties and teen clubs as a 15-year-old, DJ Godfather quickly learned how to keep a dancefloor hot - and having actually purchased The Wizards’ turntables from the man Jeff Mills himself, DJ Godfather honed his craft. At 17 he found himself playing downtown bars and gigs in the suburbs, before taking off to warehouse raves and illegal parties, like those at Detroit’s Packard Plant. 

An intimidating force behind the decks, he’s known to drop 60-to-70 records in a one hour DJ set, with plenty of flair, beat juggling and Detroit hustle in between. With his first solo record coming through the Twilight ‘76 label he set up in 1994, DJ Godfather would go on to establish the Databass imprint - still going strong with 150-plus releases - along with a specialised set of sub-labels including Juke Trax and D.E.T. Only.

For more than 25 years now DJ Godfather has been an advocate for ghetto tech at large, consistently drawing the biggest daytime crowd year-for-year at Detroit’s Movement Festival - uniting juke and jit dancers alike - while also exploring a myriad of genres like Miami bass, footwork, electro and more. Hooking up with the likes of Keith Tucker, Andrea Parker and DJs Deeon, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fat Boy Slim over the years, it was only in 2020 that he saw the release of his 44 track debut solo album, Electro Beats For Freaks.

Following that up in 2021 with a 46-track second LP titled This Thing Of Ours, and the 2022 D3T.3L3CTR0 album - DJ Godfather never loses faith in how his music can bring different people and genres together. “To me ghetto tech is a culture; mixing techno, house, electro, and booty records to create one vibe,” he says. “I do ghetto tech records because it’s me. My one music that I’m passionate about. Love.”

Born: 6 November 1971 in Queens, NYC, USA.

Joey Beltram is widely acknowledged as a leading innovator in the early development of underground dance music.

Joey began DJing as a hobby back in 1983 at the age of 13 playing mostly early electro and hip-hop. He made the switch to house music in 1985 when the first wave of Chicago house hit NYC that same year.

In 1989 he started releasing some of his early productions on several small New York record labels whilst he was working as a courier. A year later he caught the eye of R & S Records in Belgium and by mid 1990 released his first major record with that company titled "Energy Flash". Beltram soon followed with some equally impressive releases.
All through the 90's he has created some of the most timeless music on some of the most cutting edge labels of the decade.

It’s pretty hard to talk about Detroit’s DJ Bone without using the word ‘underground’; hell, the 127 word biography on his website itself uses it five times! But - and this is kind of important thing to note - it uses it because it’s wholly relevant to what he does. The owner of the Subject Detroit and Encounter labels, Bone rose through the ranks of the Motor City via his weekly sets at the Love Club (The Shelter) where his techno selections earned him the kind of dedicated following DJs only dream about - at one point he provided regular fortnightly mixes on Deep Space Radio and had residencies at different clubs across the city playing five nights a week. Showing an unwavering commitment to his cause he’s also firmly established as a producer, releasing an album, Out Of Knowhere and a whole bunch of raw 12”s and EPs that routinely get called things like ‘special’ and ‘other worldly.’

Basically, he’s a guy who is super committed to music: making it, releasing it and playing it for people and that passion, as well as his love for Detroit techno, shines through in everything he does. So we’re delighted to announce that after catching the collective eye of the Hessle Audio trio every time he’s performed at Freerotation festival, Bone’s making the journey to perform alongside them in Room One on 19th September. He also kindly made us a mixtape ahead of the occasion so that we could better outline his style of mixing, an approach which should make perfect sense to anyone who’s grown up with UK music: fast mixing, quick cuts and loads of turntable/mixer tricks…

The significance of the club residency can’t be underestimated; it gives artists the opportunity to build a tight knit community around the party, regulars know what they are in for, and word of mouth spreads the vibe and new guests arrive to check out the experience. The residency becomes by extension a community hub, for shared ideals, values, and experiences. A place to discover new acts, enriching reputations, taking things FURTHER.

Drawing on the vibe from the residencies he had coming up. Bone’s idea is to have top quality music from the first song to the last song. It’s not going to be the artist’s regular set; it's going to be people bringing their A game. Different styles outside their usual vibe. Taking the interment, friendly feeling of bringing people into his living room that was created at the original FURTHER
and turning it into a house party. RADION’s multiple rooms and layout allows for us to create the old warehouse feel of a different mood in different rooms whilst not losing the intimacy which makes FURTHER unique.

The mastermind alongside manager and Wife Ahnne Araza, DJ Bone’s role will be mixed, whether opening or closing the party, or not performing at all if he does not fit the vibe. He will be omnipresent with the careful curation of each monthly show. With RADION offering a blank canvas to create their vision.

FURTHER features an ever-revolving artists/djs both established headline acts, legends and emerging talents.

As Bone Says “I want to transform the environment physically and auditorily. Help break new music and foster new talent; I don't believe in social media as the springboard for DJ’s, it should be what they can do in the booth... That's what a residency was about. It is about listening to the new tracks that’s hot before the hype. It’s about the old school values that used to be prevalent.
It is about great music produced by great artists played by great DJs.”
