Ultra High – Stay With Me (MCA Records 1995 a Hi-Lux Production)

Having released ‘Feel it’ & ‘Never Felt This Way’ under the Hi-Lux name on Cheeky & Champions records as club tracks, ‘Stay With Me’ was aimed squarely as a chart/dance floor cross over track, it needed a new name and new label who could handle the enormity of the track and MCA Records was the label to sign it after a considerable label bidding war.

Previous Hi-Lux productions/releases were based on short vocal samples repeated & arranged in a way with synth riffs to make full tracks, with this track the approach was to experiment with a fuller vocal, not a full vocal as in Verse/Bridge/Chorus as that would have been stepping too far away from the original Hi-Lux club mix approach.

The backing track was initially produced and rather than as usual then pick vocal samples to match and add on top, a top line vocal writer, (well a mate) was brought in to come up with a few solid vocal lines to go with the backing. The magic of the track didn’t come in to play until the vocal session on the day in the studio with the outstanding voice and performance of singer Michael McCleod and the subsequent post production arrangement/edit. Having previously worked with a range of vocals when remixing under Hi-Lux, it was similarly great to have a whole selection of various vocal takes to choose from and then construct and arrange the final vocal from there. 

As Ultra High had been signed to a major label, there was a bigger budget available, out of all the Hi-Lux productions this went on to a major recording studio to have a final mix done, Sarm Studios in London.

Not only was the track a huge club hit, the subsequent radio edit took the track straight to Radio 1 where it was daytime playlisted, Michael also performed the track at the BBC Radio 1 Roadshow in Liverpool.

My first ever studio production alongside breaks master Danny Hybrid and master engineer Tony King featuring none other than Kylie Minogue - when she was acting in neighbours.

The sound was based around an underground event at ANGELS in Burnley Lancashire called VISION and used to attract thousands every Friday in 1991.

Strange but true story - that just would not happen these days. How I wish it would.
