With a discography that goes back to 98 and ranges from King Street to Konstrukt, his barbed, widescreen beats complement any dark room scenario or capacity. These crisp constructions are no exception as Maurel treats us to a tour of his darkest acid psyche…

‘Bad Thing’ casts its spells in that illusive creative chasm between techno and house as chunky, jacking beats, a palpitating bassline straight out of the Tresor playbook and iced-out toplines ensure its hypnotic allure. ‘Asteroid’ is a dizzying trip into the stars on a rocket powered by classic multi-layered hyper-fluctuating 303 and finally ‘My System’ closes on a straight techno tip where an offbeat bass tone creates latent funk and more waves of acid entwine and entangle.

Enduring, driving, tightly sprung and lean: This might be Frank Maurel’s Ovum debut but with sounds as timeless as these, it’s like he’s been on the label forever. Classic sinewy acid science like this never fails.

Gig wise, one of my highlights of the year, so far, was playing the annual Connect Festival that happened at Besant Campground in Saskatchewan.  I met some people for the 1st time but saw tons of people who I grew up with in the scene while I lived in Saskatoon.

Many of you may not know but my style was were more varied back in the day.  So, in this set, there are plenty of current house and tech tracks but also Lots of classic trance that used to be a major element of what I used to play.

In 1996, a crew of us from Saskatoon rented a van and trekked to Toronto for the World Electronic Music Festival - WEMF 11.  (The year after the Tornado WEMF).
I was flying on a pill and heard Jon The Dentist perform.  One of the tracks he played was "Global Phases".  It was full on, bouncy, acid fuelled and it was incredibly uplifting and cheesy.... I actually shed a tear.... and then hugged everyone in sight.
I bought it immediately and played it at our PPM "Temple" party with Platipus Records Crew (Union Jack, Art Of Trance, Quietman) and Electric Skychurch. )

Speaking of cheese... The Matt Darey mix of Westbam's "Wizards Of The Sonic" was one of my signature tracks and rave anthem.  It may sound dated for today's audience but for many mid 90s Western Canadian ravers, it carries an overwhelming wealth of memories.

On a Wednesday in 1992, I was listening to the New House Culture show on CFCR radio.  My mentors Kevin K and Techno Tom gave me a shout out on the show saying "You'll like this one!"  My draw dropped.  To this day, the Jam & Spoon remix of Age Of Love is my all time favourite trance track.  There's a strong chance it may be my all time favourite DANCE track.

Carlos Manaça is one of the main Portuguese DJ’s and producers and has been an essential part of the country’s Underground dance scene since its very beginning. In 2024 celebrated 38 years inside a DJ booth but his DJ schedule is still very busy. He plays mainly in Portugal but also plays in countries like Japan, England, Switzerland, Brazil, Luxembourg, Poland, Croatia, Germany, Mexico, Angola, Mozambique, Russia, USA, Canada and Spain, where he lived from 2002 to 2021. He has now moved back to Portugal.

As a producer his name started to get international exposure in 1995 with his remixes of O.L.N. "Oporto Deep Cuts EP" released on TRIBAL AMERICA (and Tribal UK), one of the main worldwide Labels at the time. His “Reboot 144” (Acid Error Mix) was the A Side of that release and was supported by no other than Danny Tenaglia, among many other artists.

In 1999 founded Magna Recordings, one of the first underground dance Labels in Portugal with releases by Victor Calderone, Chus & Ceballos, Richie Santana, Mendo, D-Formation, Natalino Nunes, Stephane K & Koutarou M, Peter Bailey, among many others. In 2001 co-produced the worldwide hit “The Strong Rhythm” with his long time friends Chus & Ceballos, included on “Deep Dish – Global Underground 021: Moscow” CD compilation which gave them their first worldwide success reaching the top of the dance sales charts all over the globe. 

With releases on Labels like SCI+TEC Audio, Stereo Productions, Toolroom, Orange Recordings, Transmit, Otto Music, Kinetika Records, Beat Freak Recordings, Moody Recordings, Kult Records, District Audio and his own Magna Recordings, among many others, Carlos Manaça is more motivated that ever. He still loves delivering his typical Tech House & Techno tribal influenced grooves to the clubbers every weekend, and feels that still has a lot of music to bring to the global Dance Scene.

Being also an Audio Engineer (took his course at the prestigious SAE Institute) and head of Beat Works, in 2022 started as a Mastering teacher at ETIC Lisbon, one of the best and well known audio school’s in Portugal, as well as an invited master class Mastering teacher at Pro-DJ in Oporto.
