One of the first local burning man fundraiser parties I attended in BC was Winter is Coming II (in 2014!)and the subsequent parties have consistently been one of my brightest nights of the long, grey winters here. What an absolute pleasure to be able to play this sixth edition of Winter is Coming as we come out the other side of the dark night that is the pandemic. 

This set starts off with an extra special deep house track featuring vocals by my dear friend Emily M. Cheung and ends on a rather epic dance music note, courtesy of the ACRAZE remix of one of my favourite Sam Smith tracks ever. Moody and dark, moving into energetic and sassy; probably perfect for your pre-party prep or just a warm up to an epic dance sesh at home. Enjoy!

Every year Shambhala Music Festival brings together some of the world's best electronic music, art, and culture. It is consistently voted one of the top ten festivals in the world. It never ceases to amaze me how large the festival has grown from it's humble beginnings in the woods of BC Canada. 

There are a few reasons why I called this mix, "The Return From Shambhala."

This mix is something personal to me. I have played Shambles many times over the years, but it is more than just my return to perform at an amazing party in Salmo, BC. I grew up in Toronto and spent some time in Vancouver, but these days I live in Victoria, BC. While I have never lived in Salmo or the Kootenays, I do have friends and family there. The friends who have worked at Shambhala are too numerous to list, even my brother Michael and sister Natasha have volunteered to help with the show. My father (Padma Samchuk) is a local and before he retired from working at raves, he worked for many years on the various incarnations of The Grove stage. Each year he brought new art, large-scale decorations and live painting exhibitions to the event. One of his large banners flanking the entrance to The Grove stage was used for the tickets a while back. Likewise, the cover art for this mix is also watermarked with one of his pieces. So for me coming to Shambhala Music Festival is also a visit with my family in nearby Nelson, BC. In that way, I am also "returning" home.

Shambhala is an interesting name to choose for a festival. As I understand it, there is the teaching of the Bodhisattva, or enlightened humans who are compassionate, generous and patient. Because of these traits, they have earned the right to escape the repetitive bonds of reincarnation to ascend to Shambhala. But instead of enjoying the fruits of their labors in that mythological place, they choose to "return" to the earth and help the rest of us become enlightened. Simply put, the idea of going to a heavenly party was a major theme when the festival was first named. Therefore, "The Return from Shambhala" is really a return from heaven.

Putting this mix together was a real joy for me as I prefer music that is emotional, genuine and cerebral. This track selection was curated to create a long, slow burn right through to the end. Often this type of programming is used for a warm up set or an introverted musical exploration going deep into the night. But this isn't an opening set. Because I went with bass heavy, ethereal and slightly psychedelic music, I envisioned this mix for the smooth journey home after the festival.

With a career spanning decades, Craig Shaw stands as one of New Zealand’s most enduring and versatile DJs. His journey began in 1989 at just 15 years old, driven by a fascination with sampling and beat-mixing. Self-taught and deeply inspired by the art of turntablism, Craig honed his craft and earned his first residency at Christchurch’s legendary Palladium Nightclub, the epicentre of the local nightlife scene at the time. Over the years, Craig’s musical repertoire has evolved from Hip-Hop, RnB, and Funk to Trance, and now encompasses an eclectic range of house music styles. Known for his ability to read the room, energize the dancefloor, and create unforgettable moments, Craig’s sets have become synonymous with feel-good vibes and timeless memories. Having performed at countless club nights, parties, and festivals, Craig has earned a reputation as a reliable and dynamic presence behind the decks. Some history - 
When Craig stepped into Christchurch’s and ultimately New Zealand’s most opulent Night Club, The Palladium, he held  the residency for the 5 nights of the week. Craig was the resident DJ right on the inception of what was acceptable Hip Hop and Electronic Dance Music and was locally famous for stopping a dance track and dropping NWA’s F the Police as they came in and searched for underage patrons. The night would always end with Public Enemy’s Shut em Down mixed with AC/DC’s Back in Black. (No disrespect to the Police, they do a great job and this was just culture in its rawest form). Once a full time and now a part time promoter, Craig understands the dynamics of the business, selling tickets and creating vibes that make punters want more. Partnering with long time friend PZ and playing under the co-lab of DiRTY CA$H, its not unusual to come across a vintage marathon set of old school vinyl. Synonymous for constantly dropping dirty bass lines, familiar riffs and catchy bootlegs the advanced technology has seen Craig progress into 4 deck mixing, sampling and will still pull out some old school scratching along with on the fly remixing.
