We've been wanting to play a dope sexy pool party for a long time now.  This came together on a humid 95 degree day at the Cadillac of campouts.  The vibe we were going for was sweaty, sexy, dirty, party music; but we were reaching deep into our crates to pull out all the songs of years past that we've wanted to hear in a bassy, half-naked, poolside setting.  So forgive us if you've heard some of these in the past, but we were particularly stoked on how the mixing worked out.

The theme is the end of quarantine, freedom, and new beginnings. This is our most important summer. We wanted to start with the tender energy of dawn out of a long dark night. The mid-set breakbeats represent breaking the chains of quarantine and isolation. Penultimately, Dubtribe's deeply ambivalent Do It Now still inspires a new beginning for us all, on its 20th anniversary. We hope this mix feels as liberating for you as it was for us to make. Perhaps, like birds at dawn.

Dao & Pwny - Calling the World - FNF 2021

This sculpted studio set was made for maximum relistenability.  From deep & sexy broken beats through cerebral tech through ecstatic super house, this set is trying to capture the energy of last half of 2013 and the optimism for 2014.  Though most of it came together in one take, we spent weeks replacing some tracks & mixes.  As a result, we can happily say this is one of the best listening pieces we've done in terms of depth, mixing, & harmonics.  And bonus... y'know, you can dance to it :D

This 2.22.2014 set was 1-2:30, following a tastefully reserved set from Joel Conway, leading up to Jeno.  Really nice warehouse spot with a lush vibe.  We we were going for tech house badassery with a generally rising arch.  We're pretty stoked on it, mixed a lotta old with new, heady with bumpy, oontz with bloOp. Dao & Pwny - Swamp Age Intro Snippet

Pwny and I spent a good deal of attention to the music selection for our late morning closing set at FnF. We're pretty stoked how it turned out! Straight Swamp Music in all its Deep hues. We were feeling pretty sunshine playful and took it all over the place in search of collecting a bagful of sweat & tears. It goes from badass to silly to tribal to morning epic vibes; we think with a cohesive psychedelic flavor.

We were even able to sneak in our first bona fide track, Swamp Age, at 1:00:00!

Dedicated to my mother, Kathryn Weed, who finally shared a sacred Sunday morning in our 'temple'. My first memory, a music memory, was with my Ma listening to Chuck Mangione "Feels So Good". She remembers it well too, because I apparently said, "Ma, Feeling good". This warm vibe has guided my whole musical life.

Live 7am Sunday morning at the legendary Endup (its rough period is over btw). I don't normally go balls-out funky house partytown, but we were only slotted 1 freekin hour each, so I went sweatballs on that place. Sean Murray and I stayed up all night getting in the mood for spanking that place with our take on the Endup vibe. I just went with it and put together something I'm kinda liking upon review, but it definitely is more of a fast-paced stompy funk vibe with 'bold overlays' (that's my spin on half-drunk and brave). It worked well enough, they hollared and clapped, I dripped on the mixer, and we all left with sweaty funkballs.

Sunday Pwnage part 3:
9am-Noon. A fun sunny romp in a field of friends on a sacred sunday in the woods. We teased a spectrum of genres out of each other and served the crowd curveballs while they served champagne and bacon. We used a lot of vocal sample easter eggs to giggle at upon relistens and had a great time pulling off the final 3+ hours of spinning for sunday smiles (we'd just wrapped up a 3 hour pre-dawn set at FRC campout up the road from Sanctuary 6). We had an absolute blast and thank Strategik for making magic!

Sunday Pwnage part 2:
5-6:30am at Feather River Campout. Pwny just slayed the crowd with an amazing hands-in-the-air set, the kind where you can barely concentrate cos everyone wants a hug and high five. I was teased about how to follow That set; I smirked and did this. I'm not sure who won the bets on the better set, I love this set, but I think she still won. (Def check out Predawn Moon, Sunday Pwnage part 1, on her page!)

We couldn't stick around for the debate though, we had to bounce down the river to finish up the 6 hour sunday journey 9am-Noon at Sanctuary 6 for champagne and bacon hour with verdant shady sunshine vibes, Champs and Bacon - Sunday Pwnage part 3. Stuck the landing too, I think ;)

It's 5:30 in the morning, it's 80 degrees and rising.  You see light coming through the trees... (and... was that John Cleese just now on the dancefloor?)

Dao & Pwny - Dawn Rise

Live set from 3:30 - 6am through dawn at an amazing campout of beautiful jerks & purveyors of fine chicanery.  I wasn't supposed to go on yet, one DJ was a no show, the former DJ was stretching his set into downtempo ranges.  I stepped up to an empty dancefloor and figured we'd coast deep house style through dawn.  All I was thinking was how we can get *someone* back to the dancefloor.  I wasn't expecting what would happen next.  

What this mix captures is how my idea of the night changed by the excited crowd.  They didn't want deep house through dawn, they wanted bass.  Lots of it.   They wanted to stomp the dirt.  Final dawn at the campout and they wanted to rage.  So I gave it to em.  Magic ensued.  This is the live recording.

Dao - Live at FM2013

Been spinning a long time, 29 years, more than half my life.  Have spun nearly every genre, have vacillated between taking this very seriously and not giving a fuck.  It is more than a hobby, this is integrating an artistic conversation spanning the globe and it is my passion.  This particular conversation we’ve been having in the Deep (house/tech/breaks) arena is particularly dope, and I’m excited to be a participant by spinning & producing that which moves my ass and soul, and raises my hands to the sky.  If asked, I'll say I spin Swamp music... humid Deep House/Breaks/Tech with vivid palates. &#13;

Mixing is my zen-state.  It isn’t an intentional act as much as it is communion with sound, with the muse.  I don’t plan Sets.  My mantra is the ‘right song at the right time’, and you’re never going to answer that question until you’re in the moment.  I kicked the vinyl habit in ‘05, but I still use CDJs..  You can hear the excitement in a live-mixed set, when there’s no net, when the DJ is a sneeze away from a trainwreck.  I like a slippery beat or two, to flash your cards, to show this is real, this is Now, and we’re deep in it, together.  I also only like to mix deep, 3 mins or so.  It isn’t deep music unless you mix it deep, over your head in sounds, dancing with them as if Tai Chi, rolling them into another as if an Akido master.  The tracks dictate how they want to be mixed, the moment dictates what energy wants to emerge next; a DJ isn’t there to be intentional, we’re supposed to be receptive.  You can hear the difference.&#13;
