On the outer fringes of the universe, they gathered to plot their takeover of planet earth. While human beings struggled to detect extra-terrestrial life, they had observed the actions and behaviours of human life for many years — identifying their weaknesses and their hardships. Much planning and preparation had been made for their journey, they just had to make it there in one piece.

Magic Carpet, the Lisbon-based imprint that's brought us releases from Baby Rollen, Phyzical Flex and Ramu, now returns with instalment number four: a four-track ride into the cosmos from Stockholm/Glasgow producer Planar Traits. Packed full of warm subs, driving breaks and intergalactic melodies, his debut is a welcome edition to a label that's fast becoming our go-to for mystical, otherworldly sonics.

The fourth and final instalment of Hospital Records’ popular VA EP series is upon us. ‘Future Symptoms Vol. 4’ rounds off the 2021 release streak with four fresh cuts with some of the most exciting acts emerging to the forefront of drum & bass. This time around expect a full spectrum showcase from Dutta, Viridity, Son, Hallow and xia - the sounds of the next generation.

Opening on a high note, Dutta brings the energy with his latest bouncing roller ‘Set A Level’. Skittery synths and a ruthless bassline showcase his signature sound which he is quickly carving out a name for himself with. His prior experience is not to be left unnoticed, with releases under his belt on Serum & Benny V’s Souped Up Recordings, DnBAllstars and Informal, Dutta is quickly rising to the top.

Hospital Records’ Women In Drum & Bass mentee for 2021 Viridity steps up for track two with a beautifully dark drum & bass stepper featuring her very own vocals on top of her meticulous production skill. Warm your speakers up and get ready for a slew of immersive soundscapes which demonstrate the Bristol-based multi-talented musician’s artistic ability. When she’s not in the studio you’ll be able to find Viridity tearing up stages at club nights and festivals, as well as garnering support from the scene’s biggest publications including UKF.

Son’s ‘Over’ journeys down into the deeper avenues of liquid drum & bass as he marks his debut release in style with a delicately crafted piece of 174BPM mastery. Lose yourself amongst airy pads, sombre vocal chops and crisp breakbeats which seamlessly infuse into a collective stream of soulfulness. It’s safe to say this is a promising debut and the start of something special for Son.

Heading over across the pond to Boston, Massachusetts you’ll be able to find the ambient electronic prodigy that is Hallow. With an impressive selection of music already available to listen to, their Hospital Records debut sees them team up with the stunning vocals of xia who’s also flying the flag for US drum & bass. With the duo no strangers to collaborating, their initial pairing entitled ‘A Walk In The Woods’ was first scouted in Mitekiss’ production feedback streams and received instant support from London Elektricity. ‘Dappled Light’ is a gorgeous follow-up with dreamlike vocals and uplifting instrumentation.

Rounding off the final edition of their widely loved Future Symptoms EP series, Hospital Records have proudly shone a light on and nurtured some of the scene’s most prosperous talents. With an array of artists throughout the series spanning the likes of Mozey, Winslow, Disrupta, Nia Archives, Stay-C, Mr Joseph and imo-Lu, keep an eye out for what Hospital have got in store for 2022...

The beautiful artwork of this release is made by the Kyiv-based artist and illustrator Liubov Kucheriava. The record is called “Prichal EP” which sends us to the Lesnoy Prichal of Closer (you-know-where-it-is-based) and the last not-really-fun fact here will be that the name O’FourtyFour is hiding the Kyiv city phone code inside. Growing up in Chicago’s south side in the late 60’s and 70’s, Deeon experienced an era of profound change in America’s cultural and racial landscape which later became the subject-matter for his extensive musical portfolio. At a time when electronic music was new and starting to define itself, he was a pioneer in developing a sound that corresponded to the time and life of the people around him and the surrounding neighborhoods of Chicago’s downtrodden; those in dire need of profound change and liberation. His personal story and musical work is now indistinguishable from that rich tapestry that is America’s contemporary cultural history. 

Deeon started small producing gritty XXX club tracks with call and response chants which Deeon describes as "for the strippers, for the street”. These original masterpieces were created with a 606, 808, and 909 sampler where he made minimal ghetto beat tracks and played them off cassette. This is what provided the spark for Chicago House and Detroit Techno. Soon now-household name DJs and producers would start picking up on this sound, and remixing it and playing it in clubs, radio stations all over the world. It would be defined as “Ghetto House”. 

“it’s just fun music. It’s kind of like a getaway from the reality of life to music. Get freaky with a stranger music. Girls kissin’ girls music. Stress relief music” he would say in an interview for 5Magazine in 2013 regarding his sound. “The best thing [about Ghetto House] is there is almost always a packed dance floor! It moves the crowd. Ain’t that what we came here for?”

In 2002, Deeon’s started his on-going battle with his health problems. Diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma, diabetes and a severe accident which resulted in having his left foot amputated, he has overcome adversity using his sound as a beacon of hope in his own life, to not lose the spark and to keep going strong. 

With a career of collaborations that reads like the who’s who of the history of dance music, remixes done by and for him that have delighted crowds all over the globe and a portfolio stronger than most of the artists in the industry, he’s now getting ready to launch a new stage in his career.
