DJ Denise - Live at FnF Summer 2022 (Poolside)

Hey all - Here is my live recording from FnF's Truck Stop, a very intimate throwback underground located in the East Bay (California) on Saturday, November 12, 2022. All the DJs on the line-up dusted off their vinyl records (as well as their vinyl skills) and played to a crowd of about 100 people. 

My set was from midnight-1am which was considerably early for the flow of the night, so I decided to play funky house & some techno at around 128bpm. Scroll below the Track List for links to some of the other DJs who played harder techno sets later in the night.

Only a mild master was done on this recording to normalize & boost volume levels so it'll sound good on your speakers. What you're hearing is what the crowd heard the night of the event. There are a few mixes in here that are a little rough, but I guess that's what happens when you're out of practice playing on Technics & spoiled with the digital gear we're used to these days. I tried to play some of the more well-known records of the time (1998-2004ish) so that people would get a bit of nostalgia. Enjoy!

What can I say about FnF that hasn't already been said? It's always an honor to be selected to play at these truly special events, and as such I always prepare a very thoughtfully curated set based on which stage I'm playing at and where my time slot is located in the day/night. I never plan my sets from start to finish, but I do spend quite a bit of time prior to the event finding new music and creating several small playlists of music I think I may want to play based on genre. 

This year, my slot was Friday night, June 2, 2023 from 11:15pm to 12:30am right before kem, one of my long-time DJ pals & FnF OG. For my slot, I wanted to set up kem nicely by warming up the dance floor with some tech house and then ramped up the energy throughout my set with some jackin' house & bass house.

Huge thanks to Ethan, the Music Committee, the entire FnF family and Radiant Atmospheres for always creating an exquisite experience that is truly unmatched in love, vibes and production.

Sometimes you start a song with one idea in mind and then the song veers off on a totally different direction and you just go with it instead of trying to wrangle it back in. Apparently I can't get rid of the baby raver in me because that's where this song went - energetic, silly and playful. Forget about the seriousness of not only music production but the world itself. Just let go and have fun!

The "banana head" vocal sample is from some random video that I saw on my IG feed one day. Turns out it's Marilyn Monroe from the movie "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950). So there you go.

Playing Daybreaker at Grace Cathedral was incredibly meaningful for me on so many levels. Growing up singing in church choir was my first connection to music, so being able to DJ in a house of worship (in my wedding dress!) really brought my musical journey full circle. I thought deeply about what to play, and decided that it was really important to play soulful, uplifting house music, the music that unapologetically spreads love in the face of judgement, the music that was created (and still is) to bring fellowship to so many Black, gay, and other marginalized groups when organized religion did not support them. For so many, house music IS church — the only church where they feel 100% loved and accepted for who they are. Bringing these seemingly two diametric opposites under one roof was a powerful experience and I’m so grateful to Daybreaker and Grace Cathedral for making it happen. So as Jack said…Let There Be House!

Hi Fam Jam!

What a delightful weekend we had closing out the near-end of summer 2024. This was my first Fam Jam and the event's 3rd anniversary. Located in the serene Santa Cruz mountains near the beautiful coast of California, USA, approximately 200 people gathered for a weekend of delicious BBQ (thanks Sharkbite!), music, and friendly faces, new and old! It was such a pleasure to be selected to perform and be present at this event.

Hi all! Here is my live daytime recording from the Shoogie Boogie camp at unSCruz 2025. I guess I decided to go full old-school funky house which basically meant a lot of DJ Dan tracks from the earlier 2000s with a few newer ones sprinkled in. Shout out to Kue for his super funky tracks "Grimes" (which samples Grimes when she F'd up at Coachella, hilarous) and his remix of Keak Da Sneak's "Super Hyphy" which has an irresistibly booty-shaking bassline. RIP to Rescue, I definitely played a lot of his music and am bummed to miss out on all the future bangin' tracks he would have made. Also shout out to the homie Adamant who is a fantastic producer but very modest about it!

Huge thanks to the Shoogie Boogie crew, y'all are super amazing & awesome and I'm glad our paths have recently crossed. I had a blast playing at your camp.

Hello all! Dancing Mandy and I are pleased to finally release our live recording of our tag team set at unSCruz 2025, Saturday night on the Luna Stage! Since we were slotted to play the closing set we decided to go ALL OUT and bang it out with some odes to the late night after hours that a lot of us grew up in. We decided to keep it spicy and play 1x1 (as in, we each played only 1 song at a time) which was a lot of fun because it gave us more opportunities to dig through our digital Rolex and find a suitable track to mix into the last one.

Free Download (Remix): Hijack & Brabe - Boogie (DJ Denise Remix)

This is my live recording from the October 2019 Friends and Family Fall Classic. The event was located just north of Yosemite at a lovely retreat called Spinning Wheel.

The last (and only) other time I have played at a FnF campout was in 2012 during the summer event. At the time I was still playing CDs but I had just reorganized my music by key. As such, during my set I was having a hard time locating songs and ultimately wasn't 100% happy with how my set turned out.

Fast forward 7 years and I was given the honor to play at another FnF campout. This time I knew I really wanted to not only make up for my previous set, but I understood the magnitude of the time slot:  Saturday night at 10pm just before FnF head honcho Ethan. As such, I spent a lot of time curating a particular tech house vibe to properly warm up the dance floor.

This recording is unedited aside from mastering the EQs and volume. If you listen carefully, you'll hear some "oopsie" fader flicks and tricks here and there. But hey - that's the glory of a live set! Please enjoy. I had an absolute blast that night.

Live at FnF Fall Classic 2019

Well what can I say about this one? My breakbeat guru friend Dot Diggler convinced me I should play a breaks set for his West Coast collective, Fraktured. I was a little hesitant at first because I don't normally play breaks. In fact, the last time I played an all-breaks set was almost 10 years ago at Rhythm Society's Phoenix in December 2010 (mix is posted here as well). But alas, I accepted his offer and went on a shopping rampage for breaks! We then proceeded to have a booty-shaking good time at Slate Bar on November 30, 2019 in San Francisco.

I went with some of the same artists that I liked back in 2010 and also discovered some newer artists that I had never heard of before. The result was a high energy set that consisted of quick mixes, lots of bass and alternating breakdowns. Please enjoy!

DJ Denise is a veteran staple of the San Francisco electronic music community, having firmly planted her roots in 1998 under the guise DJ D. Her meteoric rise led her to performing across the country from Miami to Hawaii and everywhere in between. She is most known for her precise & effortless beatmatching skills combined with nonchalant fader flicks and mixer tricks.

Denise has performed at almost every venue in the San Francisco Bay Area and also many festivals. In 2013, Denise won the Discovery Project and performed at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas. 

Between 2006-2013, Denise launched her music production career while concurrently running her record label, Mizumo Music. The label released over 180 EPs from local & international artists while her original songs & remixes were released on labels based out of Europe, Australia, North & South America and South Africa. Her music has been licensed to various compilations including UK powerhouse Ministry of Sound, LovEvolution (San Francisco's homage to the infamous Love Parade), as well as on DJ mix compilations by Simply Jeff and DJ Shortee. Most recently you can find Denise’s music on InStereo Recordings, DJ Dan’s record label.

When she's not DJing or tinkering in the studio, you can find Denise working as an ER Nurse in Oakland, California. It is evident that her mission in life is to save lives, both on and off the dance floor.
