It's always an honor to be selected to DJ at this very special event & so my track selection is not decided lightly. Since it was near 100F and early afternoon, I wanted to go for a light, happy, loving, classic funky house vibe that would mesh well while you're laying on your floaty in the pool. DJ Denise - Live at FnF Summer 2022 (Poolside)

Ahh, what can I say about this mix? Right before this campout I had gone through a really rough couple of weeks. I lost a really good friend (I love you Brandon aka B Funky) and literally 2 days after their passing, while I was on my bike leaving work, I witnessed a very traumatic fatal pedestrian vs. auto accident in which I was first on scene and felt so helpless. I know that life has its ups and downs but that was a really rough time.

This FnF campout was in my calendar for a couple of months before all this shit happened and I am such a fan and supporter of the FnF events that I was honored & excited to be DJing. But the thing was, my head wasn't in its usual, happy, content space. I felt sad and angry. So I decided that the best way to work it out would be through music with my very accepting, understanding & forgiving FnF community.

This set was recorded live on Saturday night (aka Sunday morning) on September 10 (technically 9/11), 2022 from 3-4am. There are no edits to the live recording aside from a gentle mastering process to bring up the levels, so what you hear is what we all experienced that night. This is probably the darkest set (for me) that I've played in a while. It bumps at around 130bpm and bounces between tech house and techno. It was a cathartic set and I felt like things started slowly making a turn for the better immediately after this campout.

After reviewing this set list, I want to give two special shout outs: 

1) To Matt Sassari, whom I only discovered whilst shopping for techno for this campout. I played two of his originals in this set but I actually bought quite a few more, I really like his productions and am happy to have discovered a new (to me) artist. 

2) Track 15, "Temporary," was one that I originally purchased for the FnF Summer campout but never played. I forgot about it and then rediscovered it when I was preparing for this campout. Turns out the lyrics were just what I needed at the time:

Coming off the playa and needing to decompress with music. I was inspired by my DJ gigs, the people I met, the friends I connected with and the creativity that is unleashed.

It is always an honor and a smashing good time when you're at a Strategik party! This event is the 12th annual BASSgiving which historically occurs the night before Thanksgiving. The Strategik crowd loves to shake their booty to high energy, hard, bass heavy electro and breaks. Since I wasn't ready to play any breaks I decided to go the banging house and electro route. Just a reminder that I never program my sets ahead of time, I always play "on the fly" and cater my next track selection based on the crowd. It was a packed house at the Valencia Room in San Francisco. Such a good time! Enjoy the mix.

DJ Denise is no stranger to electronic music. Since her meteoric rise in the San Francisco underground scene in the late '90s under the guise DJ D, Denise has played countless events from Miami to Hawaii and everywhere in between, spreading her unique energy and style. Her nonchalant fader flicks and mixer tricks combined with effortless beatmatching skills captivate her trainspotting fans.

Between 2006-2013, Denise launched her music production career while concurrently running her record label, Mizumo Music. The label released over 180 EPs from local & international artists while her original songs & remixes were released on labels based out of Europe, Australia, North & South America and South Africa.

In 2013, Denise stepped back from the label and production to focus on developing her career as a healthcare professional. But in 2020, just prior to the pandemic, Denise could no longer ignore her creative side and dusted off her studio computer. This decision proved to be fruitful as she grabbed the attention of DJ Dan's record label, InStereo Recordings. She now has multiple releases on this powerhouse with more in the pipeline and has ongoing collaborations with fellow InStereo artists The Incredible Melting Man (Canada), divaDanielle, Tone Abstract aka Tony Covarrubias, and Callback Funk.

When she's not DJing or tinkering in the studio, you can find Denise working as an ER Nurse in Oakland, California. It is evident that her mission in life is to save lives, both on and off the dance floor.
