Ethan – Live at Schpank Me A Go Go

Here's my set from the 25th annual edition of the Friends and Family Summer Campout. I rerecorded it as there were a couple mixing glitches in the live version - nothing too heinous, but also nothing I wanted to hear every time I listen to this set in the future. So, made it right for posterity!  =) Sound-wise, this set has a slightly different sound palette for me and even has just a touch of a psy tech towards the end - a nod to Khromata who was following me, and also just some new sounds coming out of producers I've loved for years. So, dig those big, belching, growly synths! As always, massive thanks to everyone that made and makes FnF happen. Raving aint easy, and it remains so amazing that we're still here. Rock on!

Ethan - Live at FnF Campout XVIII

By far, my favorite experience at Burning Man this year was DJing atop Garage Mahal's Ganesh Bus - in the midst of a raging dust storm - on a magical mystical art tour in celebration of my dear friend Janet Love's 50th birthday. It was just insane out - a bus full of stoked Mahalers and random burners appearing out of the dust to climb aboard; so much wind and dust that I literally couldn't tell if we were moving or not; CDJs so near the end of their rope that it's a miracle they went the distance; fantastic art appearing and disappearing in the most surreal of fashions; and a bunch of deep, warm, happy and all around awesome house music. Truly the stuff magic is made of. The actual set was not recorded, but this redux version definitely captures the feeling and is the better, quality wise, for having not been recorded under those insanely wonderful conditions. My deepest love and thanks to everyone that built the bus and rode it that day. Dedicated with love to you, to Janet Love for your birthday and to my love, Flo, for the best Burn ever, baby. Love you all, tons.

Ethan - Live At FnF Spinning Wheel

Every DJ has their signature event - BOC, the Halloween Renegade, Sanctuary, etc.  - the one event they look forward to all year, plan for, practice for and get up for, no matter what. That event for me is the Friends and Family Summer Campout, an event I've been helping produce for over 16 years now. While every year has its surprises, breaking my ankle mud wrestling just hours before my set was at the extreme edge of that category. But, like the postman, neither rain, snow, sleet, hail, irate husbands or savage guard dogs was going to come between me and the dirty pounding I had in mind for FnF's dancefloor that night. It's light on finesse and heavy on vicodin but this set Blew Shit Up and if it doesn't make you dance, you can have your money back.  Enjoy!

I played this set at the legendary CloudFactory party, OODE V, during Schwank. Which of course called for house music, West Coast style... Miguel Migs, Halo, NRK, Tango, Siesta, you get the picture. Played on a Xone-32 mixer which has a crossfader for the frequency cutoff on the resonant filter... =)

Acid House was my first love and this is the first mix tape I ever released. Recorded in 1994, it was released on cassette and features a full range of acid from classic Chicago acid house to Hardfloor landmarks like Acperience and Trancescript and numerous other stops along the way including Detroit, Belgium, Germany and more. 

Ethan - Acid Test

Released in 1995, this was my second studio mix tape. Keeping the acid influences from Acid Test, it bumps the BPMs into the 140s for a long, smooth, tech trance trip. Mainly german and english producers from Pete Lazonby to Union Jack. Labels from Harthouse to R&S to early Platipus.  Often described as great driving music...

Ethan - Technosis

Captured in 1996, this is a long time favorite set. It's super diverse, including tracks from Single Cell Orchestra as well as Mr. C. and covering all kinds of ground, genre wise, including (in the first track) the now classic Platipus sound: bubbly, long-building, thumpy, uplifting, piano trance. For a while it was great. =) This particular FnF was for Joe Rice's birthday (among other things). Double rainbows when we rolled up the warehouse doors in the morning.

This is a 2002 studio mix that resulted from a Scrabble bet I lost to ViaJay who I had just started dating at the time. Not sure why I thought Acid Techno was the way to pay off that debt, but whatever motivated its origin, it's a bangin set, one that I was proud of then and still enjoy today.

Don't be fooled by the nondescript name of this mix - it's straight up, Bangin Acid Techno and the first recorded set of me playing acid techno... which is really the sound 
I came to be most known for, back then. Recorded in 1998 at a party we threw in the office of the startup (Topica) I worked at then... Startups used to rock =)

Ethan - Live for Silver Lucy

Colorful founder of the much-loved Bay Area dance collective, Friends and Family, Ethan has been making dance floors sweat since 1993. Known early in his career for hard Acid and Techno sets, the years since have revealed a taste for Breaks, House, Tech House, Deep House, and of course Techno of all flavors. 

While currently turning up at DISTRIKT, BrassTax, Space Cowboys, Strategik, MotorCityJam, Prohibition, Opel, and other Bay Area underground events, Ethan has also held residencies at MAD Mondays, RhythmMethod, Delve, and of course Friends and Family. Reaching way back you would have found him holding it down at some of SF's now legendary raves including The Gathering, Vision, Basics and more.
