DJ Premier’s catalog is incredible. If he was only known for his work with Gangstarr, he’d still be considered a Top 3 producer of all time, easily. But the fact that he’s worked with everyone from Biggie to Jay-Z to Nas to KRS-One makes his discography pretty much incomparable. And we’re not talking about obscure cuts that lost their appeal years ago. These are timeless songs! So for today’s edition of The 10s, we present Primo Treats: 10 Classic Non-Gangstarr Primo Joints. We’ll probably have to do a part two and three to this because dude has worked with everyone we love and always comes correct. This month marks the passing of the lauded rapper Notorious B.I.G. and to honor his legacy, New York resident DJ Finesse debuted a special tribute during DJ Premier's Sirius/XM show "Live From Headqcourterz" on March 8.

The mix showcases Biggie's a capellas paired with Premier-produced beats. While the original tribute was shorter for air-time, Finesse extends the tribute for hip-hop fans here with a special intro by Premier himself.

DJ Premier's "Live From Headqcourterz" airs every Friday night from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Sirius/XM Channel 44, Hip Hop Nation. DJ Finesse is a regular guest on the show, filling in for Premier as an on-air mixer.

B.I.G. over Premier

25 Years ago today Raekwon dropped his game-changing 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx'.  I've had this date circled on my project calendar since January.....If I only recorded 2 tributes out of all the classics released in 1995, OB4CL & Mobb Deep's 'The Infamous' were the absolute Must-Do's.  Those masterpieces were like artistic cousins and quickly became the soundtrack to that summer.  To say this album was important is a HUGE understatement.  It was monumental, and arguably the apex of the Wu solo catalog.
This LP cemented Rae & Ghost as a dynamic duo as they formed their own clique-within-the-clique, effortlessly passing each other the baton over RZA's cinematic production.   Weaving intricate stories of street tales mixed with 5%-er knowledge, this project played out like a feature film.  Vividly spit in their coded slanguage, you felt like you were right there next to them on the island of Staten.  I tried to maintain the original feel of the LP, while adding some original samples + blends to switch things up a bit.
Since the album is more pka The Purple Tape, I'm dropping this tribute cassette-style with 2 separate sides.
