Coal-ash dumping by Duke Energy and its cozy crony-ism with our governor (as well as the subsequent federal investigation into it), the fracking bill, blocked voting rights, anti-gay marriage legislation, and the “Moral Monday” Protests trying to fight back. North Carolina is a state in turmoil.

The artists and musicians of the NC Music Love Army have come together with DJs, producers and remixers to create an album that shows our solidarity with anyone who opposes what’s going on in my home state right now. My contribution is this remix, of grammy-nominated artist Rhiannon Giddens’ song “We Rise."

This a DJ mix only in the most literal sense. The tracks are beat matched, there is a flow—but it’s not executed the way I would put together a mix for a club. It’s intended to tell two separate stories. The tracks span close to 17 years, from 1991-2008.

The first group of six tracks tells a short history of the music that inspired me to begin writing and producing my own electronic dance music…from industrial rock to techno to big-beat. The song that finishes out part one, “Proton Girl,” was one of the first tracks I wrote for my debut album in 1998. The idea came to me while watching my girlfriend at the time dancing at a rave.

The second part is my journey through active addiction.

“I Remember” was the first song I listened to upon getting my car back after leaving rehab. I listened to it as I moved my stuff into an Oxford House. It represents a new beginning.

A younger friend of mine turned me on to this track. I knew about JuiceWRLD (and his recent passing)and certainly Marshmello, but something about this song hit home for me. 

I think right now we're all dealing with some version of this. We're dealing with COVID, inept leadership, division, loss, sadness. It can feel like we're all "f*cking up and wrecking sh!t" sometimes. This song is everything I feel about 2020... and every genre I can possibly throw into one track: rock, hip-hop, house, EDM, pop. I just can't stick to one genre lol.

I hope you'll kiss your 2020 goodbye with this song, a FREE download. Say goodbye to bygones, and begin again in 2021. No resolutions, just commitments. No promises, just love and effort.

One final note: as a person in recovery from addiction, I recognize that there is a drug reference in this song, and that JuiceWRLD passed from an accidental overdose. It breaks my heart and it's not anything I'd encourage - but I'm *not* here to censor another artist's thoughts or feelings, especially after death.
