Ungodly War is one of the many stand outs from our 2020 reissue of Lamont Butler’s one and only album It’s Time For A Change. Taking inspiration from jazz, soul and funk, Ungodly War is a dynamic track recorded some 50+ years ago in Lousiville, Kentucky. 

“People have always loved that track (Ungodly War), people would always want to talk to me about it and you know it’s more relevant now than ever before…it’s stood the test of time” Lamont Butler

For this release we wanted to try something a little different and so, for the first time on Miles Away, we’ve enlisted the help of a musician to add a little somethin’ somethin’. Someone who has spent a lifetime hoarding, editing and compiling rare soul and disco records. There’s was only really only one person at the top of our list and he goes by the name Al Kent. 

Al’s sound is big and his edit flows from the off, allowing everything we love about the original to shine through perhaps even more brightly than before. With a little beefiness added to the drums and a subtle restructuring in parts, the result is an exemplary 7” bullet ready for the dancefloor. 

On the flip is a deep cut Get Up And Praise The Lord, which features on the album and was a track many a DJ reached for from the album.

about "Gringo" (original by Little Feat):
One song that hasn't been covered much is Little Feat's "Gringo," a Bill Payne composition originally recorded two years after bandleader Lowell George's demise when the band had already broken up, and included on the odds-and-ends compilation Hoy-Hoy!. This 1984 cover by singer-actor Arnold McCuller is one of the tracks on Yacht Soul 2 that best exemplify the concept that binds all these recordings together, the very definition of what we call "Yacht Soul".

Welcome Back, friends, to the Yacht Soul cruise that never ends!
This theme, explored at length in the previous installment of this series, is a fertile one that just keeps on giving, and give it certainly does on the tracks we have dug up for your perusal, enlightenment, edification and enjoyment on Volume 2.

For those just joining us, the concept here concerns R&B and soul artists mining the songbooks of their white contemporaries for cover versions that serve the dual purposes of potentially garnering some crossover radio airplay as well as introducing great songs to segments of the listening public who might otherwise miss them. Some of these versions might have come about because they were personal favorites of the artist in question, others might have been strongly suggested by their labels or by the publishing company, but all of them provide an entirely new perspective on what were already fantastic songs to begin with.

So there you have it--a further dig into this nebulous concept that reveals more unexpected connections and crossed paths. Understanding the hows and whys of the way these particular covers and collaborations came to be is as fascinating as just enjoying the music itself, and there really is a lot of great music to dig into this time around! We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did putting it together.

First time the full version of the Jazz-Funk classic LP track 'Too Soon Your Old' has been cut to 45, essential.

Penny Goodwin grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin singing in church with Al Jarreau, doing weddings, talent competitions and bar mitzvahs. When she left school she started singing in popular mob run clubs such as Alfie's, Sardino's, and King's Four graduating to clubs in Chicago and Caesar's Palace in Vegas. Despite her huge talent only this one studio LP exists, a mix of covers by Marvin Gaye, Gill Scott Heron plus original songs by herself and manager Sy Lefco. The LP also featuring strings by members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and jazz guitar legend Phil Upchurch. One of the great american jazz vocal LP's by Milwaukee's unsung queen of jazz.

One of the best mid-tempo disco raritys (and we mean rare) to come out the Deepfunk scene. When Keb Darge first played 'Party & Get On Down' in the early 2000s on Soho it put a few noses out of joint as it was such a departure from the deepfunk driving take no prisoner sound. True to Keb's Scottish stubbornness and like any real DJ he stuck to his guns and created a dance floor favourite. Athens of the north bring BAB to 12" for the first time, not only that but its a nice wee extended cut transferred direct from the master tapes. No brainier if you got class.

Sammy Ayala has been a complete pleasure to collaborate with the past years! He's not only been in the most legendary salsa bands (Cortijo), but he wrote music with that huge smile until the day he recently passed away.  For his 74th? or 75th? Birthday, Sammy came down to one of our Turntables on the Hudson parties & rocked the mic & some percussion with us until 4AM... I can only wish to be as talented, animated & positive as Mr Ayala when I'm over 70! Unfortunately we lost Sammy in the physical last year (2012) but we hope you explore all his beautiful music over the years!
