Cannonball would have turned 97 this month were he still with us. His records were some of the first I collected - there are so many and so varied, his dedication to recording live sets for his albums and playing with countless amazing musicians, infusing politics into his music and his "raps" in-between songs, is all legendary. I had not realized until now that all of this was done in such a short amount of time - he passed away at the age of 46, one year younger than I am now. To have played and recorded with the legends (Miles et al) then go on to create a massive discography and universe of his own music - along with his brother Nat - is an astonishing feat. Salute!

In the run-up to our Mr Bongo x Higo Beat Japan tour with DJ Nature we are shining a light on some of the incredible Japanese DJs we have joining us. 

Yukari BB is a key face in the Kyoto scene. She heads up Jazzy Sport Kyoto and her talents behind the decks / as a producer have seen her sign to the renowned Sounds Familiar roster. In her own words, “most of the tracks in this mix are ones I often play during my DJ sets, so it naturally turned out to be quite a danceable mix from the beginning. I usually mix a wide range of genres in a crossover style, and for this mix I blended in tracks like Nico Gomez’s “Caballo Negro,” which I often play, dedicating it to Mr. Bongo. Since I created this one as an all-vinyl mix, it turned out to be a more organic and eclectic set overall.”

“I got “Carnival At Night” by The Island Musicmakers this summer at Yo Yo Records in London. It’s a Caribbean funk tune with beautiful steel pan harmonies, and although I’ve only played it a few times so far, it’s already become one of my favourite tracks.”

I started working on this tape over a year ago. People seemed to dig the first one, so I figured I'd cut up a few more random breaks and funky records for a sequel. After laying down the music, it still seemed missing something, and so I started going back and adding vocal samples and audio clips, from both vinyl and digital sources. There is an old clip of De La Soul being interviewed on NPR where Dave and Maceo talk about the ways djs and producers buy and dig for records, and it inspired me to search further for related - and unrelated - soundbites. In the end, this tape is kind of an adventure through the world of record-buying, classic movies, 90s Grammy award ceremonies, and b-side rap accapellas, all over a backdrop of breakbeats direct from my personal crates. Like the first mix, while the bulk of the cuts and mixing was done using Serato, everything you hear besides the interview clips is from original wax.
