This past weekend I hit up Egon's store Rappcats where DJ Shadow was selling some of his vast collection. I missed the opening day but snuck in and out on Sunday with a random high school band record, featuring a nice cover of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" as well as some original tunes. That record reminded me I'd been wanting to do a school band episode of Pullin for awhile now, so it was a good inspiration to dig through my crate of very random college and high school music for a couple of my favorites. You never know what you're getting with these records - so many are poor quality recordings or cheesy renditions, but among the many there are some real gems. Hope you dig.

Ending 2021 with a long set of some of my favorite purchases this past year! (I can't really call most of these "digs"). This episode is a combination of some long-time wants I knocked off the list with some of my favorite new records by both young, incredible artists as well as brilliant veterans like Brian Jackson.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 185 (Favorite Records I Got in 2021)

Sorry for the long delay, been a busy month. Starting to pack the records up now, so this will be my last mix at my current residence, and probably for another few weeks until I get things unpacked on the other side of LA. Kept things thematic for this one though - all jazz-related releases on the Melodiya label, which was the Soviet-era label that released records from not only Russia but other countries in region. Been slowly building a small stack of vinyl from this label and figured I'd play a few here. Enjoy!

After a long time in the waiting line, we are thrilled to present the fourth full length album from Timewarp inc. Yes indeed, this time on wax with a limited 250 copies double 12” black vinyl edition, packaged on a heavy duty gatefold. Yes we are proud to say that this is our third vinyl release to date. Theory of Revolution is a strong album release, bringing 19 freshly produced tracks. A few of them where previous released on singles and ep’s and only on the digital domain format though the past years, most of them gained great success & big attention, with many playlists from dj’s and radio stations all over the world. 

Timewarp inc (aka Angelos Timewarp Stoumpos) managed to provide many new tracks, along the already released ones, while he also managed to remaster them and tried to  give a fresh breath to his “old gold” tracks that are still hot and playable out there.

You can expect a wide range of styles and tempos in this album, from dub and reggae to funk and disco, downtempo to house, and from soul to tropical electronica, all produced and based on wide range and borderless music concept, surrounded by some well cooked mediterranean characteristics. All blended with his unique style of producing, mixing and mastering at his “audiophile analogue studio” in Athens. 

Featuring artists gave their touch on the album songs. Georges Perin contributes on four songs: Theory of Revolution, I’ll Be Ok, Realistic (yes, here he also plays the harmonica) and on Tropicaliente with his great talented voice and unbeatable vocals. Jammaroots contributes on Restart and she provides a wonderful and anti-political riddim jam with her great vocal skills. Gobey contributes on Liberty is Our Destiny with his riddim and everything sparkles out the good vibes, while RSN gives a few delicious scratches. 

The Mage provides his story telling on Economic Boom by bringing his warm trip-hop vocals while Beatride plays the hammond hook. Fanis Karoussos brought his talent over Smoke Miash with his amazing anatolian Santur and his master playing skills. Also we have two remastered versions especially for this vinyl album release. Emma Anagnostou participates on Afrofunk with her etherial soul, funk vocal while George T. provides the warm baseline. Salomi Vasileiadou contributes with her amazing performance vocals on the song Yuil Disco Breaks while Dj Tzinas carries the trumpet hooks. Multi instrumentalist George Mitsikaris performs with his Sitar, Tabla and Bansuri Flute on the track Dubwarp. Timewarp Junior (Morpheus) takes the microphone for the first time and he shoots a few words over Tropicaliente. While the seven times DMC champion Sparky T. bring his turntables and scratching skills over four tracks. Alex Ioannou aka Alex The X-King the most wanted main performers on the album provides his great guitars melodies, hooks and riffs on the most album songs but he also brings out a few base lines and the sweet tropical Yukelele sound. Tasos Fotiou appears on Dub in Disco with his sax section, on Reggae on Dope with his silver flute and again with his sax over Yuil Disco Breaks. Niles Philips lents his huge beats for the new version of Bullshit. Nikos BJ and Fanis P. contributes on tracks Afrofunk and Soulfiction with their guitars.

We Own The Night is the solo debut album from Stockholm producer and beatmaker Max I Million. Known for his funky cross-breedings of classical Boom Bap and futuristic sounds, he has also made a name for himself as a skillful live performer using the MPC as his instrument. 

While Max has worked with an array of legendary emcees such as CL Smooth and Chuck D from Public Enemy to name a few, his instrumental work is colorful enough to stand on it's own feet. 

This statement is proven to be true on We Own The Night, a soulful 12 track composition that also boasts the lyrical skills of Blu, Planet Asia, TriState, and Twizzmatic. 

"The title refers to the night time theme of the project. I started working on this album during a period where I would stay up all night making beats, simply because that was when inspiration struck and I felt free from the chains of day to day life. There was something special about making beats while looking out the window, watching the cloudy skies illuminated by the city lights and snow covered rooftops."

Max I Million was a close associate to DJ Devastate who tragically passed last year, which also left its mark on the album. 

"I started contemplating on my own mortality. We can all just be gone suddenly one day. Also, after passing the age of 30, you start thinking about the legacy you leave behind for the world. I decided, I can't leave this earth before I've created something beautiful."

While this might sound a bit grim, the overall vibe of the album is uplifting. Starting off with a heavy hitting funk track featuring Max's side project and production duo Iceberg Sound System, the album then shifts towards a more classic Hip Hop vibe and finishes off with experimental soulful instrumentals that fulfill it's promise - We Own The Night.

Witchtape #54 | Guest Wizards : Dauw & Schemering

(Story continued from Witchtape #53)

After saying goodbye to the tiny little black witch in the middle of the African rain forest, the witch and wizard flew eastwards, following the equator.  The unspoiled forest underneath them was so vast that two hours later, they still hadn’t reached the edge.  It’s a little known fact that also wizards can fly, as their code of conduct dictates them to travel the world on foot, except when they’re in the company of a witch.  So it’s easy to understand that the young witch was a much more skillful flyer than the giant wizard, who hadn’t flown for nearly a century.  Soon the girl got into a playful mood and started to make some perfectly timed loopings and corkscrews around the clumsy wizard, while giggling and yelling the whole time without interruption.  Meanwhile the sun was going down and they were looking for a place to spend the night, when they saw the contours of a huge volcano light up in the soft evening twilight.  The couple climbed to a higher altitude, until they were above the tree line where they decided to land.  They touched down on a patch of soft moss, and soon they were lying in each other’s arms, finally reunited after 5 months of separation.  It was getting cold quickly, so the little white witch snuggled really close to the giant black wizard, caressing his grey beard while his hands enjoyed the incredible softness of a young witch’s hair.  Soon a majestic full moon rose above the horizon, while the witch and wizard listened to each other’s heartbeat, which was soon joined by the faint but bouncy heartbeat of the unborn new witch who was clearly enjoying the company of her father, as she refused to fall asleep.  It was well past midnight when the three of them fell asleep, under the soft moonlight, high up the slopes of a volcano which was towering above the pristine African rain forest.  They woke up before dawn, and became immediately spellbound by the myriad different colors of the morning twilight.  Slowly the mountain bathed in light and when the little witch looked at the wizard, she started to laugh when she saw dewdrops all over his long beard (after which he started to chuckle too).  Just seconds later, the first ray of sunlight hit the mountain and soon they were bathing in the sun, while the forest in the valley was still plunged in darkness.  Soon time had come to continue flying into the direction of the sun.  The wizard became very excited as he knew that they were nearing his home ground… the village where he was born and raised… the destination of their epic trip to the heart of Africa…

An all vinyl mix of music sampled by two of the greatest all time producers DJ Premier & RZA. 
You probably tuned into the online sound clash a few nights ago where these two titans went beat for beat in live showdown. In the end, it was hard to pick a winner. Either way, some great music was played and we all got to go back to our younger days for 3 hours while they dueled it out.
