August Mixtape

Back in 2002, High C of the Dallas Texas based crate digging crew Rehash and DJ Raj Mahal of Soul Strut would swap mixes to feature on each other's site (Real Audio style).  The mixes usually contained loads of breaks and beats lifted from obscure 70s jazz & funk, with the occasional soundtrack and prog record thrown in.  I present you exhibit A.

DJ High-C - Summer Blend '02 (2002)

One of my early mixtapes.  This was done in 1996 for Fat Beats to sell in the store.  I did it 100% live, which meant that any time I messed up making it I had to go back and start over.  I only had one Technics 1200 at the time, and one crappy belt drive. To my ears now it's full of rough transitions, weird tempo changes, and off beat cuts... But it worked at the time, and was my entré to radio in NYC when G-Man and J-Smooth of the Underground Railroad radio show heard it and invited me up to spin. All original vinyl on a breaks and beats concept.  Hope you enjoy this artifact!

Open Your Mind Mixtape Side 2 1996

My podcast schedule has been a bit off with the upcoming move, but here's a new episode - this time around it's all digital jazz selections, some newish things found on Bandcamp recently. So much good new music out there, you just gotta do a little searching for it. Perusing Bandcamp and other platforms isn't the same things as digging up old records, but it is a whole new universe of music to navigate where cool stuff can be found. Anyway, enjoy.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 136

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 138 (All-45s Late Summer Set)

Pre "J.T" 70s Kool & The Gang is one of the seminal funk outfits that would later inspire a generation of hip hop producers and musicians.  As a tribute to co-founder Ronald Bell who recently passed, Raj Mahal spins some of his favorite classic and obscure funky Kool joints with a few covers thrown in for good measure.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 141

Went into the crates to pull a few selections from the great jazz label Muse. Tried to stay away from some of the sample-favorites (no Walt Barr or Catalyst this time around). Instead, it's a journey into the a variety of styles and flavors, some creative and beautiful music made by a wide range of musicians in the 70s and early 80s. There's definitely another stack of records I wasn't able to include this round, so maybe a part two will be in the works for the future.
