An amazing record recently landed in my post office box, an absolute classic of an album I honestly never thought I’d see in person let alone get a copy of: Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s quartet masterpiece “Yakhal Inkomo” - I insist everyone at least take a listen to this on Spotify or elsewhere. On this episode I've included the title track to start off the set. Finally back after a several-week hiatus due to my move. Definitely some hard losses these past weeks, with absolute legends Pharoah Sanders and Ramsey Lewis passing away. Ramsey Lewis's records were some of the first jazz and funk records I purchased, and I highly recommend his catalog - it's still pretty affordable, and just as beautiful and funky as many of the "rare" and pricey records from other artists. Pharoah Sanders' records are getting a bit more pricey these days, but most are still attainable - and there are some good represses out there. Absolutely beautiful music. Rest in Power to both these legends, I'm eternally grateful for what they brought to all of us.

I tried to intersperse some interview clips of each of them within this mix, which I did live on Twitch a few days ago.

Way of the Drum is a globe-walking rhythm record built almost entirely from drums and percussion, with only a few carefully chosen exceptions. Each track drops into a different circle: underground ritual pulses, marching snare on a broken battlefield line, rain-soaked forest grooves, desert caravans, and a towering taiko ceremony at the red gate.

The album moves between intimate and massive spaces—a smoky jazz club where drums and bass trade sparks, metallic found-object rhythms that clang like machinery, and mountain vigils where low drums roll like distant thunder. Melodies stay minimal or absent; the focus is on groove, texture, and how many ways skin, wood and metal can speak. By the closing heartbeat of Last Light on the Rim, the whole record feels like one long, shared initiation into rhythm.
