Pullin From The Stacks - a personal selection

This past weekend I hit up Egon's store Rappcats where DJ Shadow was selling some of his vast collection. I missed the opening day but snuck in and out on Sunday with a random high school band record, featuring a nice cover of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" as well as some original tunes. That record reminded me I'd been wanting to do a school band episode of Pullin for awhile now, so it was a good inspiration to dig through my crate of very random college and high school music for a couple of my favorites. You never know what you're getting with these records - so many are poor quality recordings or cheesy renditions, but among the many there are some real gems. Hope you dig.

Music Is The Message, Love Is The Answer Day 3 and what a finale this was! Afronaut and Mark Force have curated some incredible all day takeovers and this one was probably the best yet. Just check out this line up, as both legends and up and coming stars of the game gave us their take on the scene they call 'Bruk'. Absolute fyaaaa!. Amalia is a singer, songwriter and producer based out of Montreal. There's pure love in her modern soul productions and in her own words "diasporically inter~weaving & healing thru sound...luv u be eva wondafull". It’s quite an honour to get an exclusive mix from an artist who you’ve been buying his records for 10+ years. Marc Mac of 4Hero fame (founded with Dego) and tons of other projects like Visioneers, Nu Era has been one of the most influential forces in all sorts of cutting edge British music; from Jungle, Broken Beat to Downtempo.

Marc always shares tons of absolute treasures on twitter (@MarcMac4Hero) so we asked him to make us a mix as part of our amazing Forgotten Treasures. He dug deep for this one and delivered a fantastic mix which he affectionately calls “Weird & Wonders”

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 195

On this months show we have author, producer, Grammy Award nominee — Jon Kirby. Jon Kirby was the Associate Editor at Wax Poetics (2007-2010) and currently provides A&R, Research and Development for The Numero Group. On the show we go to great lengths to discuss the first discoveries of UTB/Andre Gibson and how their friendship led to an on-going partnership. Plus the beginnings of the ‘Ultra High Frequencies: The Chicago Party’, history and experience surrounding Chicago and what it truly means to be working for a great organisation like the Numero Group. To wrap up the show, a tribute mix is included showcasing some of the great music featured on the Numero Group releases where Jon’s direction is applied.

Sorry for the long delay, been a busy month. Starting to pack the records up now, so this will be my last mix at my current residence, and probably for another few weeks until I get things unpacked on the other side of LA. Kept things thematic for this one though - all jazz-related releases on the Melodiya label, which was the Soviet-era label that released records from not only Russia but other countries in region. Been slowly building a small stack of vinyl from this label and figured I'd play a few here. Enjoy!

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 206 (Melodiya Jazz)

Finally back after a several-week hiatus due to my move. Definitely some hard losses these past weeks, with absolute legends Pharoah Sanders and Ramsey Lewis passing away. Ramsey Lewis's records were some of the first jazz and funk records I purchased, and I highly recommend his catalog - it's still pretty affordable, and just as beautiful and funky as many of the "rare" and pricey records from other artists. Pharoah Sanders' records are getting a bit more pricey these days, but most are still attainable - and there are some good represses out there. Absolutely beautiful music. Rest in Power to both these legends, I'm eternally grateful for what they brought to all of us.

I tried to intersperse some interview clips of each of them within this mix, which I did live on Twitch a few days ago.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 207 (Pharoah Sanders + Ramsey Lewis Tribute)

Sonic explorers Strata-Gemma return with a brand new cosmic jam in the shape "Space Faun". A blend of jazz, electronics and prog that is both playful and mysterious. 

Strata-Gemma, the musical project that masterfully blends jazz and electronic music, led by DJ and record producer Niccolò Bruni and musicians Luca Cacciatore (winds) and Andrea Moretti (bass), lands for the first time on Simona Faraone's label, New Interplanetary Melodies, with their third album: 'Radamanto'.

The duo tell us "Space Faun is a kind of bizarre cosmic dance of a faun, which translates into flute envelopes, synths and a pinch of Italian prog in the refrain".

Angis Music invites you to listen to "Selva" the second release from the Padova duo composed of Stefano Cosi (@stefano-cosi-1) and Alberto Lincetto (@alberto-lincetto). The three songs featured represent the deep desire to communicate an evolution of sound and to tell a story that goes beyond traditional paradigms and genre labels. The “chiaroscuro”, lights and shadows, that characterize HUMA's music are once again the result of compositional and sound explorations that travel from jazz to 70’s funk, from deep house to electronic, with echoes of Brazil and film soundtracks. Side A opens with the misty and romantic landscape of "Free and Lost”, in which acoustic, electronic and deep bass sounds blend in a dark and spiritual atmosphere. The journey develops further into "An Ordinary Life” which sees the participation of Yeofi Andoh, aka A Race Of Angels (@araceofangels), Los Angeles-based vocalist and co-author of the track, and of Amilcar Soto Rodriguez on classical guitar. It slowly emerges from the initial psychedelic sphere, landing on luminous harmonies and funk rhythms to reiterate a contrast that speaks of life cycles and the relationship between man and nature. This path ends with the title track "Selva" in which the synthetic percussive tangle keeps the listener in a meditative state of disorientation guided by the melodic lines of a dusty Fender Rhodes. It is the temporary epilogue of a story that has just begun…
