Across 110th Street 1/15/23

Been a very busy and pretty rough last few weeks. Finally had a moment to catch my breath and put together a short mix. Big shout out to my man James Park in Brooklyn for the invite to spin at Bierwax - couldn't make it happen because of recent circumstances but the records on this mix are from the bag I brought to NYC before plans went sideways. Some favorites and some new stuff, breaks and soul and other flavors. Hope everyone is healthy and safe, and a huge thank you for tuning in to this and any other mix you might stumble upon! Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 232 - Brazilian Jazz

We invited our good friends the Patchouli Brothers for a special guest mix session just a few days ahead of their set in Montreal for the annual Mundo Disko party presented at Pride Festival (August 13th. Infos here)

We gave the talented DJ/Production duo and brothers in disco a simple challenge: make us a mix featuring their favorite Montreal discothèque records.

“We focused on some of our Montreal favourites from the 70s and 80s.  We missed a few though. Amra. Nina Dunn. More! 

Most of the Canadian disco we love is from Montreal! There are definitely a few great Toronto records from the time, but a lot of what we dig comes from or is connected to Unidisc and their sub labels. Think there was just more of it produced in Montreal as the scene was stronger? The Montreal music we enjoy is more of that electronic, euro influenced sound, while the Toronto stuff we’ve found to be more connected with classic r&b and/or Caribbean influenced. We like the likes of Crack of Dawn, Liberty Silver, Everett Haughton, from Toronto, just to name a few to not leave our hometown outta the picture! “

Pullin from the Stacks Episode 235 - Recent Digs and Things

Welcoming back to the podcast, we have Sam Don to share and discuss his latest release, Just A Touch (Athens of the North, 2023) — the new compilation focusing on underground U.K Soul. Together, Aswad and Sam discuss the term ‘Street Soul’ and what it means to them, the culture, the impact it created in a short space of time. Sam shares the inspiration behind the project, working closely with artists to resurface these rare, and sometimes lost and forgotten music.

The rabbit on the moon is an Aztec fable about the god Quetzalcoatl, while on a journey in human form, was tired and hungry. A rabbit offered itself as a sacrifice to feed him, and Quetzalcoatl, deeply moved by its selflessness, placed the rabbit's silhouette on the moon for all to remember its great heart and sacrifice.This features Manuel Trabucco Soprano Sax and base solo by Patricio Pietrek on the Warwick thumb Bass.
