Stones Throw & The Beat Junkies did a joint event that was put together by ArtDontSleep in the city of Los Angeles 3 weeks ago (10.26.13). it is the first time that Stones Throw & the Beat Junkies have joined forces to do a special event. Imagine Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam Funk, Prince Paul, Karriem Riggins, Rakaa Iriscience, LMNO, the Cypress Junkies, Jonwayne, & of course, the Beat Junkies all under one roof. In a momentous celebration of the British jazz legacy, the iconic jazz-rock pioneers Soft Machine are set to enrapture listeners with an exclusive audio premiere of "(Slightly) Slightly All The Time". This captivating rendition takes center stage on the B side of their upcoming limited edition 7” vinyl, a heartfelt tribute to the legendary trumpeter Harry Beckett featuring his classic "The Dew at Dawn" on the A side.

Led by the masterful guitar of John Etheridge, an original Soft Machine member since the mid-'70s, and the velvety saxophone tones of Canterbury scene veteran Theo Travis, the band's recent lineup shifts include bassist Fred Thelonious Baker—a former collaborator with Beckett—and the debut of drummer Asaf Sirkis, succeeding the late John Marshall.

"(Slightly) Slightly All the Time", originally part of Soft Machine's seminal 1970 opus 'Third', undergoes a brilliant reimagining for this exclusive release. Stripping down the sprawling epicness of Mike Ratledge's original composition to its essential elements, the track is injected with new life, showcasing Travis' exceptional flute artistry that effortlessly channels the '70s Brit jazz vibes.

As the second installment in My Only Desire Records' Brit Jazz 45s series, Soft Machine's contribution not only pays homage to the golden era of ‘60s and ‘70s British jazz but also offers an unprecedented audio premiere experience. In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This seventh bonus mix delves into Mid 90s R&B, specifically the pairing of R&B vocals with classic Hip Hop production, ’Hip Hop Soul’ if you prefer, the natural evolution from New Jack Swing, covered in ones of the previous mixes in this series. The mix features production from many of those frequently associated with the sound, The Untouchables, Sean Combes et al, alongside names from the Hip Hop underground who dabbled in R&B: DJ Premier, Easy Mo Bee, The Beatnuts, Salaam Remi and others. 16 Bar rap verses abound – AZ, KRS One, Grand Puba, Notorious BIG, Nas and many lesser known all appear. The first is by Monty Alexander, which I only recently found out about, and the last is a more well-known take by Johnny Lytle. In-between are a variety of mellow-ish tunes for coolin out in the August heat.

Figured it's a good time to re-up this tape from six years ago. I've been hesitant to do so since there's five million J. Dilla tribute tapes out there, but...whatever. Maybe you all will dig this one too! Here are the notes from the original release:

"I really dug Dilla, his choice of records, his lush filtered samples, his basslines, and the fact he loved to eat donuts. I was introduced to his genius by Jumbo of the Lifesavas. He hit me with a dub of the early Slum Village album before it dropped, and told me to dub it and give it back to him the next day, cuz that was his only copy. And even rocking a dub of a dub, the beats were just so ill. I’d bump the shit til I couldn’t take the rhmyes anymore, but I never got tired of the beats.

I’d wanted to do this tape for awhile, and felt I should put something together dedicated to Dilla, as I was a fan of his music. Not every beat or 12 inch, but the feel of his production – he just had a great ear for great records. This tape is a mixture of some of my favorite Dilla-related records (that I own on wax) from well-known to more obscure, from rock to classic hip-hop tracks. It is by no means any kind of compendium, and isn’t meant to be. It’s just a brief sampling of music I dig, music that represents the inspiration I took from Jay Dee."
