The latest episode of De Kat Memwa comes from Alex Tackenberg, aka Alex from Galax—a long-time figure in the underground music landscape of the Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr, and a steady resident in some of its most important institutions over the past decade: Acephale, dublab.de, and the ever-iconic Salon des Amateurs.

Over the years, I’ve found myself repeatedly drawn to Alex’s mixes, each carrying that distinct Köln–Düsseldorf fingerprint: raw, punky, hypnotic, fuzzy, melancholic, and always stylistically adventurous. And crucially—played as slow as possible. A true DJ’s DJ.

About a month ago, I stumbled upon a guest mix Alex recorded for LIO Press, and it pierced right through me. At this point in my life, I’m mostly inspired by sonic collages, mixes that weave storytelling with spoken word and evoke a melancholic tranquility. Naturally, I felt compelled to invite Alex to contribute to our series—his sensibility fits right in.

This mix, in particular, feels incredibly resonant. It reminds me of a nearby bird sanctuary where I often go for mental health walks—a space of stillness inside the noise, where clarity slowly returns.

Below, Alex shares a few words about the mix he called 'The Garden of My Own Space':

'For some time now I have been thinking about the coming of spring in the urban space—a confrontation between city structures and the places within them marked by trees, plants, flowers, and the sounds of an unreal nature in the town. And yet, these spaces serve as a retreat for each of us.

Virginia Astley’s From Gardens Where We Feel Secure and Emily Dickinson’s nature observations and poems formed a metaphor, a cohesiveness of my thoughts and feelings. They provided the framework to express these feelings musically.'

Love-Songs are a trio from Hamburg and Berlin consisting of Thomas Korf (electronics + vocals) Sebastian Kokus (Bass) and Manuel Chitka (Percussion). They play cosmic, kraut-inspired electro-acoustic music. Thomas and Sebastian also are in charge of the main visual design of Pingipung. He has an odd obsession with the sound of soft things landing just right on a flat surface. He dreams of one day locking eyes with a capybara in the wild, and craves for the outdoors but doesn't find comfort in camping. Working in gastronomy for years, and ever since worrying that serving one course too late will disrupt the entire dining experience, he regularly burns his mouth while quickly eating a hot meal, without letting it cool down. Life without Vietnamese food would be incomplete. He navigates life as both architect and cultural worker, and hosts the Domestic Mind Wandering show on Callshop Radio.

Hing's mix meanders through different frames of mind while changing pace. Things aren’t what they seem. The woods are alive, pulsing with secrets and danger. Every tune feels like an entry to another dimension, where reality blurs. You wonder what lays beyond the whispers of the trees, you replay cryptic dreams in your mind. The atmosphere is intoxicating.
