This is a live all 45 mix made with one turntable and a loop pedal. It was constructed for Red Bull's 45 night on October 27 2008 in LA. This mix includes some cutting room floor ideas from The Hard Sell (DJ Shadow and I on 8 turntables and two loop pedals) and elements from what would later be part of my one turntable/loop pedal live mix CD "Sound Of The Police", which is out now.

Mello Music Group To Release New Label Compilation Project!

“Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows” will be released on Janaury 28th, 2014!

 

Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is the fourth Mello Music Group compilation – previous compilations include Mental Liberation, Helpless Dreamer, and Self Sacrifice. It’s also perhaps our best to date! 

The album showcases MMG’s ever-evolving roster of top-tier producers and rappers, many of whom (e.g. Oddisee, Quelle Chris, Has-Lo) fill both roles with equal dexterity. Additionally, it features several artists MMG plans to collaborate with in 2014, a testament to our commitment to working with those who possess singular sonic and lyrical abilities. 

Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is at once compact and comprehensive. Clocking in at twenty tracks, there is not a minute wasted and not a miss in sight. It is diverse and yet somehow cohesive, tailor made to rock your car speakers and your brain stem. It is MMG’s reminder that hip-hop is alive and well, and a reintroduction to a label that’s tried never to forget what makes music compelling. 

With ten distinctive producers behind the boards, the soundscapes on Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows cover the map and the album is all the better for it. Oddisee of course helms the opener and tracks throughout with a musicality like few in Hip-Hop today. L’Orange brings subtle, jazzy suites to the table, and Quelle Chris provides dusty samples looped over hard-hitting drums as well as anyone else on the record. Jeremiah Jae also makes sure the bass-rattling, electronic bangers coming out of L.A.’s beat scene are well represented. Nothing here is solely run-of-the-mill boom-bap. Each beat is far richer and more inventive, able to play on its own and provide the perfect complement to the raps at hand. 

As far as the rhymes are concerned, the rappers we’ve selected for Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows leave nothing to chance. MMG heavyweights like yU and Has-lo cut with long practiced precision, and newcomers like Castle are in top form. The same can also be said of Hellfyre Club features Open Mike Eagle and Milo. Regardless of who’s on the mic, scores of bare-knuckle battle rap bars are tempered with rhymes both emotionally raw and mentally challenging. The MCs on our comp are intelligent and self-aware, capable of the comic, tragic, and in-between at the sound of a snare. They have an old-school reverence for rhyme with a modern state of mind and modern problems. Come-up or comedown, shine or shadow, friend or foe – they are fearless in confronting all fears.   

Above all, Mandala Vol. 1, Polysonic Flows is MMG’s opening salvo for the New Year, a sign of the great and innovative music we plan to release. We’re proud to call it the first 2014 jewel in the crown of our crest.

Since debuting in 2010, Jacques Greene has become one of house music's foremost romantics.

Well, we say debuted: it's no big secret that Greene produced as Hovatron in his early days, releasing a small handful of singles and building a reputation in Montreal's party scene, DJing at local raves like Turbo Crunk (we'll also forever ride for his remix of Janet Jackson's 'Discipline').

In 2010, he reinvented himself as Jacques Greene, taking the hip-hop and r'n'b influences at the heart of Hovatron and applying them to more straight-forward house structures. The formula worked like a charm, with a first single for Night Slugs followed by a brace of 12"s for long-term friends LuckyMe, including the brilliant 'Another Girl'. Co-signs swiftly came from Radiohead, who asked Greene to contribute to their King of Limbs remix album, and the xx, who took the Canadian on tour.

The years since have seen Greene both hone his sound and his hardware-heavy live show, while also collaborating with vocalists like Tinashe and co-founding the Vase label with manager and Baller's Social founder Joe Coghill (releases have so far come from Koreless, Weeknd producer Zodiac, Gorgeous Children and more). Ahead of a live show at London's Roundhouse this Friday October 31 with support from Koreless and Evian Christ, Greene delivers a long-awaited FACT mix, featuring several of his own unreleased tracks, a speech by Sean 'Diddy' Combs' at Howard University and a visitation from the Trance Lord himself.

Today marks ten years since James Yancey, better known as J Dilla, passed away. Regularly considered as one of the greatest producers and musicians to ever grace hip-hop, his innovative techniques, meticulous accuracy and outright groove have been mimicked and revered since he passed in February 2006. His magnum opus, Donuts, was released just three days before his death; much of it produced from his hospital bed using just an MPC, sampler and portable turntable — a remarkable feat under any circumstance.

Raj Chaudhuri (aka Raji Rags) — head of music at Boiler Room and Livin' Proof co-founder — has been an avid Dilla disciple for a long time. Classic Album Sundays recently invited him to chair a talk on Dilla's finest work on the anniversary of its release date. What ensues is not only a highly informative and emotional examination of the 31-track project, but a cross-check of all the relevant events that lead up to its making.

Donuts Dissected: 10 Years On

The Estate of James Yancey has revived J Dilla’s longstanding company PayJay as a functioning imprint to release Dilla’s long lost vocal album, The Diary on April 15th, in conjunction with Mass Appeal Records. Initially intended for release in 2002, The Diary is the final batch of unissued material that Dilla had assembled for release during his lifetime, lending crucial insight into the producer’s prowess and thought process in the period leading up to his break with the major label system and the extremely fertile period that followed (which encompassed the making of the canonical classics Ruff Draft, Jaylib, and Donuts). The Diary features vocal performances by J Dilla, Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Kokane, Frank and Dank, Nottz and Boogie, over production by Dilla, Madlib, Pete Rock, Hi-tek, Nottz, House Shoes, Supa Dave West, Bink! and Karriem Riggins.
