The original poem is in the public domain and remains a cherished part of American holiday tradition.

The opening five verses preserve Child's beloved narrative of a winter journey to grandmother's house for Thanksgiving, complete with the eager anticipation, biting wind, ringing bells, and the impatient wait at the barnyard gate. This extended edition adds five original verses (Verses 6-10) that transform the work from a purely nostalgic celebration into a contemporary comedy about holiday overindulgence and its consequences.

The transformation shifts the emotional arc from innocent anticipation and arrival into a progressive comedic descent: beginning with the decision to abandon calorie counting at the sight of pumpkin pie, escalating through multiple plates and tightening belts, and culminating in the revelation of twenty pounds gained and a sleigh that won't budge under the extra weight.
