This mix was composed after a trip west to Cleveland and Chicago, then back home through Pittsburgh. A series of serendipitous circumstances found me spinning in Chicago on a Thursday evening. While I was travelling, my boy Dao worked out the details from afar on my behalf. It was great to have Alyssa with me for this one. We had a great time, then enjoyed Chicago the next day. We did the architectural boat tour. What an aesthetically pleasing city Chicago is. When we returned home, my boy Damian was in town from Orlando, so we threw down some records for a few hours. It has been a full July, and I am grateful for all my friends and family. All this contributes to the mix you find below. Thanks for listening, for real.

Our latest mix in the Local Underground RDG Series is offered by Reading native Jon Moyer, who presents a tightly woven tapestry of house, tech house, and bass tracks all designed for the dancefloor. 

In this episode, Jon moves seamlessly through genres as he deftly blends tracks across a spectrum of sound. The mix bubbles to life with Jemil Deep's breaks intro before getting right to business with Daniel Dubb and M.O.N.R.O.E's "Little Helper." From there Jon Moves into tech house territory with a healthy dose of lush vocals peppering the arrangement throughout. The result is a proper underground dancefloor affair from a man with attention to detail and a knack for keen and agile mixing.

Local Underground RDG is pleased to share this mix from techno-philosopher Hypatia. Recorded live from Savage Sirens Productions Easton House Party in March of 2024, the set features 12 blistering tracks from Hypatia's deep crate. Pembroke provides the bones, offering six combined tracks from Karia Records and the Pembroke imprint, while the mix is fleshed out with classic tracks from Hypatia's progressive roots.

Precisely mixing deep grooves and dark percussion, Hypatia invites you inside for an intimate look at the sacred spaces that inspire her signature sound.  As to be expected from Hypatia, the resulting mix offers a seamless blend of progressive dance music in historical perspective.

The true spirit of the original global underground series was to paint a retrospective picture of a destination’s dance music culture. In this sense, Hypatia captures the essence of Easton’s small but thriving party scene. There is hardly a more welcoming small town in Pennsylvania for a DJ to grace than Easton. With a such diverse crowd, the eagerness to dance is their common bond. Hypatia uses this vibrant pallet to paint a portrait of Easton’s dancefloor culture with a recreation of her legendary closing set for the Easton House Party from March, 23 2024.

This was ground zero for the debut of her groundbreaking harmonic progressive house EP, “Pembroke - Wishing Star” which was released May 17, 2024. The theme for the rave was centered around 90s house music. Hypatia’s masterful selection included some of the titanic tracks that closed out the nineties, just as she closed the party. With the fringes and tassels of progressive house’s halcyon days, she wove in her new vision for the future of prog and the rise of Pembroke.

Originally from Reading, PA, Peter has spent time in Brooklyn, Boston, and Los Angeles honing his signature sound. Deep, layered, textured, and wide open, with plenty of space between the notes for the music to breathe. Justin Thomas - Local Underground RDG - In Motion - Deep, Indie, Progressive

Local Underground RDG proudly shares this new mix from Tom White.  Since the beginning of this project, Local Underground RDG has been eager to get our hands on a mix from the White family.  It only seems fitting that the first submission should come from Tom, the first of the three siblings that I had the opportunity to meet. 

It was somewhere around 2004 that I first encountered Tom at a weekly gig I was doing in the old Works building in West Reading. Tom had been a fan of electronic music for several years at that point, and was a regular at our Digital Movement events.   He kept coming out, and from then on, we more or less supported each other's efforts for the last 20 years.  

Early on, Tom helped us rejuvenate the Digital Movement moniker on the east coast, while Dao and Caleb kept things going in the Bay area.  From there, Tom began doing his own events, producing his own music, and making connections with other trance lovers in Philadelphia and beyond.  Through all the adventures and through all these years, Tom has always kept me in the loop, and kept me on the decks.  The continued support is much appreciated, as is this new mix. 

Tom White's Sleeping Dog is aptly titled.  The mix feels like a visit from an old friend. A reliable companion. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t try to prove anything. It just unfolds at its own pace.

The early part settles in with some lighter, more reflective tracks.  Nora En Pure kicks things off, followed by Rivo, Cloves' "Forever Till the End."  By the time Paraframe's fresh take on “Flaming June” comes in,  one can feel the shift, smooth and subtle.  Everything here is connected in a way that feels intentional without being forced.

In the middle stretch,  the energy is clearly there with tracks from Ottaviani, Gioli & Assia, and Ruback, but it never tips into excess. It says controlled. Even when it builds, it doesn't lose its shape. In the midst of all this, Nora En Pure's "Tibet" taps into the nostalgia of years gone by with a track reminiscent of Greece 2000.  Tugging at the edges of that famous riff, "Tibet" bridges the gap between yesterday and today. 

Later on, familiar yet new elements emerge, but never intrude. The Depeche Mode remix and a reworked "Everything in it's Right Place"  stay consistent with the same vibe Tom’s been drawing the whole time.

In the end, Tom furnishes an emotional, haunting mix of trance, melodic trance, and techno that never overdoes it.

In his second submission to the Local Underground RDG project, Tom White provides disc 2 of “Sleeping Dog." This mix stays true to the styles of the first mix, but pushes a little further into the aggressive sounds to which Tom is typically drawn. It is once again deliberate styling by Tom, to create a mix with all of the melodic and powerful elements he’s always loved from Trance, but at a slower pace as to not run off those that treat trance as a dirty word.

Dog House begins with the groovy Recall by HotLap and drifts in the dance classic melody with the  “I Feel Love” rework.  In the next stretch, tracks by AN21 & Ali Bangor, Michael Canitrot and Mariz & 19:26 take us right back into the vibes from disc 1. Moving us to the halfway point of this mix are a new twist on Deep Dish - Say Hello and an updated version of “Tell Me Why” by Supermode.

From there to closing, each track has an uptick in energy and aggression with tracks from Cubicore, Fehrplay and a Lauren Mia remix to close things out. The melodic sounds still permeate each track, but with driving techno layers throughout.

Local Underground 21 revisits a classic live recording from 2001, featuring https://soundcloud.com/djsurcotti behind the decks at Elements Oxygen Bar in downtown Orlando, Florida. Drawn from the height of the "dark drums" movement, the set showcases the tribal house sound that dominated underground dance floors at the turn of the millennium. Tracks from Peace Division, Steve Lawler, and Kevin Swain & David Snell weave together rolling percussion, deep grooves, and brooding atmospheres into a seamless late-night journey.

Mixed with precision live on two turntables, this recording is a time capsule from a period when patience, groove, and percussion took center stage. Twenty-five years later, the rhythms remain as compelling as ever.

For Volume 23 of the Local Underground RDG mix series, Justin Schumacher delivers BKLYN, a 35-track set rooted in the city's longstanding relationship with house and techno.

Justin's musical foundation reaches back to the intersection of 1990s hip-hop and rave culture, and he spent more than two decades helping shape New York City's underground electronic music scene. His productions have appeared on respected labels including Rawthentic Music, Illegal Alien, Dystopian Rhythm, Unknown Territory, Monocline, and Italo Business, while his DJ career has taken him through many of Brooklyn's defining rooms, including National Underground, Sullivan Room, Verboten, and TBA Brooklyn.

BKLYN reflects that history. Rather than chasing trends or dramatic peaks, the mix is built with pace and precision. Justin blisters through an astounding 35 tracks in just 75 percussive minutes. Robert Hood, DJ Deep, Kerri Chandler, Carl Craig, Mark Broom, Heiko Laux, Truncate, Mr. G, Forest Drive West, and others provide the framework for a set that values rhythm, momentum, and subtle shifts over obvious spectacle.

Today, Justin calls Scranton, Pennsylvania home, where he remains active in the region's underground NEPA electronic music community. BKLYN is both a tribute to the city that shaped his approach behind the decks and a reminder that those influences continue to travel with him.

Closing with Justin Schumacher's own Hit That Again, the mix feels less like a retrospective than a snapshot of an artist who has remained true to his roots while continuing to evolve. For this installment of Local Underground RDG, we welcome an old friend back into the mix.

I've known Hypatia for years, going back to our days in the regional underground house scene. A classically trained pianist as well as a DJ and producer, she now records as Pembroke and runs Pembroke Records out of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

This one-hour mix offers a look into the world she has built around the label. Most of the selections come directly from the Pembroke catalog, including several of Hypatia's own productions alongside music from artists connected to the imprint. Her classical background finds its way into the music in subtle ways, with modal harmony and composition sitting beneath the percussion and atmosphere.

There's some history in here, too. John Creamer & Stephane K's I Wish You Were Here, remixed by 16B, appears among the newer material, connecting the mix to an earlier era of progressive house that still feels very much present in Pembroke's approach.
