<<< Pt. 2 >>> Greetings all massive! On this set I go back to my tribute series and on this edition I focus on the works of one of my favorite roots reggae singers from the mid 70's-early 80's, The Blessed Youth, Hugh Mundell who was born on June 14th, 1962 in Kingston, Jamaica. Those of you who are not familiar with the singer or just know a likkle bit about him, Hugh Mundell was a teenage prodigy who had a soulful voice, thought-provoking lyrics, and mesmerizing stage presence, Mundell was poised to become a true legend in the genre but tragically, his promising career was cut short, leaving fans and fellow musicians devastated. Hugh was introduced to reggae music by a friend of the family, Boris Gardiner  and ended up producing 5 albums & numerous singles during his short career. Hugh at the age of 13 started to record one of the great roots reggae records of all time titled "Africa Must Be Free By 1983" for producer Augustus Pablo which was completed & released by the time he was 16 years of age. What seemed likely to be a brilliant career, it was cut short as Mundell was shot to death on October 14, 1983 while sitting in his vehicle on Grant's Pen Avenue, Kingston, Jamaica. Also in the car were Mundell's wife in the passenger seat and a teenage Junior Reid, who was sitting in the back seat. Mundell's wife & Junior Reid survived the assault. The reggae world was left reeling from the loss of this young talent who had so much more to offer throughout his career.

Mundell, early on, briefly recorded as a DJ/Toaster under the moniker Jah Levi & recorded for producers such as Augustus Pablo, Henry "Junjo" Lawes, King Jammy & Lee Perry. He also produced Junior Reid's first 2 singes "Speak The Truth" & "Know Myself" for the Rockers International label. Despite his short-lived career, Mundell’s impact on reggae music is timeless. His lyrics, often tackling themes of social injustice and spirituality, continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
