Her Majesty’s Ship turns to emergent new talent La Mverte for its 11th release. The French artist has appeared on labels like Astro Lab in recent times and has shown himself to be someone with a fresh new perspective that takes cues from Italo disco with waves of metallic synths and muted rhythms all embedded within. This new EP comes backed with a remix from Acid Washed.
Up first is ‘Through The Circles’ which is a purposefully slow and wiggling groove that has a hint of dark biker disco to it. The drums are raw and loose and the synths are wide and searching, making for a delightfully cinematic experience from start to finish.
Next up is ‘The Rim is Shot’, another delightfully slo-mo swagger that has chattery claps, spikey synth stabs and wobbling basslines all dancing slowly around each other in loose limbed unison.
On the flip side, ‘Crash Course’ then ups the ante a little, laying down quicker drums and running them through with more tobacco stained synths and thick, rasping basslines. A filtered male voice beams down from above and brings a dark-wave vibe to proceedings, but La Mverte’s dazzling production still shines through.
Acid Washed, of labels like Record Makers & MB Disco, then reworks the track into something a little more kinked, funky and colourful. His playful version has dancing, nimble synth stabs and hip swinging percussive claps that work you into a dancing frenzy with ease.
It’s only early in the career of La Mverte, but on the evidence of this lively and arresting post- disco EP, he is sure to go on to big things in the near future.

Backtearer & Why Be - dc

The ‘dc mixtape’ takes the form of an oneiric suite, moving through expressive registers alternately liturgical, pastoral, and diaristic. Why Be and Backtearer recorded it between Copenhagen, Berlin, and Hong Kong, and the resulting beatless vignettes bear traces of their disparate recording contexts as a kind of aural sediment, accumulated across a jagged multi-continental procession. Following their collaborative track “Freedom Amph” on Backtearer’s 2015 LP ‘Swear’ for Berlin’s YYAA Recordings, this is the two artists’ first full-length release.

Backtearer & Why Be - dc (JANUS006)

@Her-Majestys-Ship delivers another fantastic LP, this time coming from @La-Mverte aka Parisian producer Alexander Berly in ‘The Inner Out’, a 10 track album. 

Having cut his teeth playing bass in post-punk bands, Berly has recently been focussed on this solo project. It finds him mixing up Italo, New Wave, industrial sounds and his SH-101 into razor sharp and arresting productions. He first released on this label back in 2014 and DJs as well as playing keys with label associate Yan Wagner. He has also previously taken part in Red Bull’s Music Academy in Tokyo and is a regular at festivals such as Sonar and Nuits Sonores. 

This is his greatest statement yet and we are big fans of the opening track, 'Past The Circles’ which is a dark & broody piece of music filled with tense synths and corrugated drums that set a shadowy atmosphere. 

This is an impressive debut LP that really showcases La Mverte’s artistic vision.

Centrepiece track 'Act like it then' is a robust techno transfiguration. Hard-hitting percussion lays an attention-grabbing foundation, above which off-kilter textures and a contorted Cardi B sample push the track into mesmeric territory.
