Sound & Scent Baths

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberalist mould, we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Regardless of one’s point of reference, we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

This month we have interdisciplinary artist, performer and healer, A Space for Sound aka Rena Anakwe (@djladylane), to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these (and other) anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality…

Licht Himmel was conceived as a 14-channel-composition for the Gasometer Oberhausen, a former gas tank and now an industrial landmark. Instrumental and electronic sounds are combined with field recordings to form a composition for this special environment. The stereo version was remastered in 2012.

-As part of my year-long artist residency at ISSUE Project Room, I have been exploring what a communal (Nigerian) diasporic healing practice looks like, sounds like, smells like and feels like. I will be sharing a sound and scent collage of my inspirations and musings in regards to my exploration in performance art rituals and the five elements of nature.
