Lux Experience – Disco Church EP

Norway’s Lux Experience throws the chapel doors wide open for the Hot Digits congregation to enter and marvel at the miracle of his Disco Church EP. 

Launching this ecumenical four tracker is the Heatwave-flavoured ‘My Disco Church’ - a groovy, four-to-the floor box cutter of a tune that grabs you by the boogie bone and doesn’t let go until you succumb to its charms. A solid, punchy 121bpm beat combines with slappy disco bass, furious bongo soaring harmonies announcing we are here to get on down. And that’s what we’re definitely here for. 

Track 2 is the pleasure inducing, brass tickling and tambourine tappin’ party starter – the simply titled ‘Muuvin’. Coming in at a deceptive 121bpm, Muuvin’ is one of those tracks that has you air drumming along to the beat whilst harmonising with the familiar vocals. A magnificent experiment in Brooklyn inspired funk, tight rhythms and dynamic soul. 

Track number 3 is the happy, clappy and seriously sexy ‘It Happens’. This one has a bassline so filthy you want to wipe it (and yourself down) with an antibacterial cloth. All shoulders and attitude, ‘It Happens’ is an up-tempo dance floor beast. It rolls, it bites and it growls. It bares its teeth to reveal a saxophone smile, leaving you trapped inside a Prince and Bootsie Collins combined fever dream from which you might never wake up. Outstandingly good from Mr Lux. 

Finally, we arrive at the slow-motion laser show of ‘Up Is The Way’.  The tempo is scaled right back for this final sermon from the Reverend Lux Experience. The almost sleepy and louche bass drum transfixes you from the off whilst slick guitar riffs and raunchy clav stabs do the heavy lifting for the incoming sassy, rolling vocal. Spellbindingly good stuff! 

The Disco Church EP oozes class from start to finish with four tracks that showcase the huge talents of one of Norway’s finest.  Lux Experience’s Disco Church is the broadest of churches and you’re all very welcome to join.

A blast from the past bought to us from 'Cross Fade Records' as they reunite with Jay Caruso for this new infectious version of 'Turn The Music Up.' which was originally at hit for the 'The Players Association' way back in  March 1979.

Jay Caruso and G-Sax brings us this soulful production which features a carefully curated blend of guitars, horns, percussion, and funky vocals. G-Sax's sizzling saxophone solo adds a fiery touch, elevating the track and igniting dancefloors as it did back in 1979.

Derek Kaye married his schoolboy passions of music and electronics in 1973 when he constructed his first disco sound system, aged just 13. Prior to this, with DJ equipment something of a rarity in those days, he created a custom setup that bypassed the need for a mixer by rewiring his turntables in such a way that he could flip the sound from one deck to another, and installed a switch that would dip the music so a microphone from a portable cassette player could be used to announce the song on rotation. His work soon grew in sophistication and a new console was built, with his schoolmate, Greg Wilson, buying Derek’s old rig, thus beginning his own well-documented DJ career.

Over the past 40 years, Derek has continued to DJ in and around the North West, both in residencies and guest spots, and his passion for music and electronics are still just as strong. His enviable studio has gone through the transitions of working with notator (the forerunner to logic) on the studio essential Atari 1040 ste with a collection of keyboards and Akai samplers, to just about “working out of the box” as is the case with a lot of studios now.

Today, a lifetime of experience is being teased out of the connoisseur by lifelong friend and A&R curator Greg Wilson, beginning with the double header of 'Nobody' and 'Music Up': both reworks have caused dance floor rapture for Greg over recent months and, as festival season fast approaches, they are now being shared amongst the wider DJ community for the very first time (Derek and Greg have also recently joined forces to remix Bryan Ferry’s ‘Don’t Stop The Dance’).

'Music Up' is an overhaul of the 1979 Vanguard 12” by the Players Association, Kaye's version injecting further verve into the original with a new bassline, percussion, strings and arrangement. Personally requested by NYC stalwart Danny Krivit when Greg Wilson dropped it during his recent gig at The Date in London, 'Music Up' is a surefire festival favourite, for house and disco heads alike, that’s set to fly this summer.
