The first couple Max D releases, like ’09-’10, were issued via RAMP Recordings (somewhat of a dubious label in terms of payout, Ras G (RIP) called the owner dude Suge White a few times and…ay, truth is truth). One of my many sick label mates on that situation was PUDGE, and I remember hearing something of his and just pursuing everything else possible. This is from those deeply important LA 10”s that All City put out in 2009ish. The tightest sloppiness, unreal to me at the time. Still hits so hard.

This is perhaps my only example of “discovering” a song via the normal method that this mix-series focuses on, like Shazam etc. I actually have never had Shazam on my phone, but asked somebody in the car I was riding in to find out what this was. My parents listened to Rufus & Chaka growing up, but I was not hip at all to this utter banger. Embarrassingly, I even already had the record at my house, just hadn’t ever peeped this song, like a dum dum.

Max D’s mix for us is largely an ode to the DMV in the decades spanning the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Similarly to the label curation of Future Times and Max D's collaborations, the mix is stitched together not by a certain sound, but by memory, feeling, and an essence of funk across genre. Cascading, loopy jazz, DC radio station-honkers, and quintessential go-go, among other tunes, await inside.

This DJ needs no introduction. Andras is one of those rare DJs who can play anytime, anywhere. He’s been at the top of Australia’s music scene for years and has played at festivals, clubs and pubs, all over the world - he even plays at the odd mountain bike race. This is by far the most creative set we’ve heard, never have we witnessed genre mixing on this level. Thank you for coming on this journey Andy, we had heaps of fun and are keen to see what you’re up to next.
We also want to say a huge thank you to Channel 10 News Studio and Paul Narkiewicz for all your help. Paul did an immaculate job with the set design for this shoot and the rest of the crew was incredibly friendly and inviting.

"Going back-to-back makes sense. We live together, we really love the same music." The Berlin-based duo discuss their partnership behind the decks—and in life.

Tama Sumo and Lakuti are two of Berlin's best-known house DJs. Partners in life and in music, they've played as solo artists (and together) since the early '90s, and hold residencies at Panorama Bar. Unsurprisingly, they have an unparalleled synthesis behind the decks and in conversation, and on this unique episode of the RA Exchange, they interview each other about their formative experiences in the music industry and the roots of their respective musical practices—for Tama Sumo, the bars and lesbian weekenders in Kreuzberg, and for Lakuti, disused warehouses in Johannesburg.

They also talk about deeper, more intrinsic aspects of their crafts, their relationship, and their identities as marginalised artists navigating Germany's house and techno scene. This interview was recorded live at The Standard in London as part of the series TheirStories, an essential event In London's queer cultural calendar that platforms narratives from the LGBTQIA+ community. Xi'an-born and Toronto-based producer, pianist, and DJ Ciel steps up for the next Phonica Mix with a slow building club room warm up. With a selection of deep and chugging bass, house and techno this is a mix that equally see itself lending its ears to the home listener as well as the club dancefloor frequenters. Its this diverse sound that has seen Ciel take the helms of some of the greatest clubs, festivals, radio shows and podcasts as well as releasing solid records on labels like Mister Saturday Night, Peach Discs, Coastal Haze and more her sound is truly solidified through these outputs.
