Doctor Jeep gets dark and stormy for podcast 081. 

Based in Brooklyn, Doctor Jeep is the alias of Andre Lira who has become internationally known for his innovative bass mutations that span from breakneck breakbeat rave anthems to murky garage, speedy 4x4, and chuggy dancehall wormholes. Last year Andre celebrated 10 years of the Doctor Jeep project which has seen him release on global labels such as SPE:C, Trouble & Bass, Tumble Audio, and his own imprint DRX. All of this alongside remixes for the likes of Sam Binga and Addison Groove and contributing tracks to esteemed mix series such as fabriclive. Most recently Doctor Jeep returned to DRX for the first time since 2019 with the absolutely fire release of ‘Reflexing’ and we just had to get him on board for our mix series.  

Speaking about the mix, Andre says, "I recorded this on a stormy Sunday afternoon; it's been absolutely down pouring in New York lately and I wanted to do a sludgy, hazy mix to fit the mood. A few classics from my collection interspersed with new promos from friends, all a bit slower than they usually are. I love playing tunes at the "wrong" speed, gives them such a different energy. Unfortunately, the first 20 minutes had to be cut as one of my turntables had a cable malfunction so we're going right into it halfway through the intro track, which I later realized feels like you're walking into a set midway through...immersion!"

Cyborg Rhetoric aka Dan Cella (fka Dan Carraway, GlowTape!) has been producing and releasing electronic music for nearly two decades. His eclectic catalogue ranges in genre from house and techno to electro and blog house. While all of us are living the quarantine life, Good Room has asked friends and residents to share mixes for our Solitude Series so you can dance on your own. The 18th mix comes from Jubilee and Nasty Nigel, recorded as a livestream for Pirate Studios. Two mainstays of the NYC scene, Jubilee is a member of the Mixpak family while Nasty Nigel is member of Queens rap collective World’s Fair. They went b2b for 2 hours and 20 minutes worth of bass, grime, dancehall, R&B and more.

Good Room Solitude Series 018 - Jubilee & Nasty Nigel

Jubilee has been staying up all night since as long as anyone can remember. She grew up in South Florida on the sounds of Miami bass, freestyle and Dirty South rap blasting from local radio stations like Power 96 and 99 Jamz. As a teen, she traveled to raves up and down the coast, absorbing Florida's uniquely regional palette of breaks, electro and drum 'n' bass. By the time she moved to New York City and started frequenting drum 'n' bass parties like Direct Drive and Konkrete Jungle, D&B was already becoming a gateway drug to a love of other UK underground styles such as grime, garage, dubstep and UK funky.

You can hear the influence of all this music on Jubilee's debut album, 2016's After Hours – soaked in 808s and 909s, fog machines and laser rays, and containing a huge hit in the form of "Wine Up," a bubblin' bashment cut featuring Bronx dancehall sensation HoodCelebrityy.

This year, she follows it up with her sophomore LP, another collection of late-night anthems and drum machine workouts. The album took three years to put together, as Jubilee burned the midnight oil in the studio in between headlining slots at European festivals, gigs from New Zealand to Brazil to Las Vegas and taking the stage alongside her Mixpak Records family at London's Red Bull Culture Clash and Notting Hill Carnival.

"This is a mix of songs that have been my lockdown Go-tos. It's been rough staying motivated but these are the tunes that really have just made me fist pump with headphones on while sitting on my couch. They make me feel like I am playing to an actual crowd during a live stream. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do."
