Oh, the memories. Phats & Small’s ‘Turn Around (Hey What’s Wrong With You)’ was one of the most inspiring House tunes in the late ‘90s and it returns in a multitude of forms and shapes to get the amassed crowds cheering and chanting again. Taking the spotlight are CALVO’s groove-heavy remix, Futuristic Polar Bears’ briskly-paced progressive rendition, Maison & Dragon’s classic take on the record and Mousse T’s Dirty Dub. Add to that the sweet sensations of the original that captivated the whole world nearly two decades ago and you know for sure that this timeless tune is back in business.

Drumcode starts 2020 with a sterling EP from genre hero Thomas Schumacher, his first on the label after a long association with Adam Beyer.

No ifs or buts, if you’re a techno fan, Thomas Schumacher holds a place in your heart. His 1997 classic ‘When I Rock’ still gets rinsed, he has a vast body of stellar work on his influential former label Spielzeug Schallplatten, including a release from Adam Beyer, and he continues to deliver pin-sharp productions via his Electric Ballroom imprint, including a scorching remix of ‘The House of House’, the 1994 classic from Cherry Moon Trax. The rework was first played by Beyer at Time Warp and has been a 2019 highlight.

He first contributed to Drumcode in 2018 with ‘The Unseen’, a stirring contribution to ‘A-Sides Vol.7’, setting up a maiden EP with ‘Crimson’. Beginning with the brilliant ‘Feist’, it’s a no-nonsense brain melter, as 303 arpeggios bloom and recede, creating a thrilling rhythmic intensity throughout. The title track ‘Crimson’ is crafted around two minutes of tension-building synths, before a beat finally appears and a rasping deep bassline commands the dancefloor. ‘Anker’ brings the rave with eagle-eye focus, unleashing a wall of fierce acid to round out the pack.

Montreal's @JacquesGreene is releasing a deluxe edition of his 2019 'Dawn Chorus' LP via @LuckyMe this month.

'Dawn Chorus', Greene's long-awaited second album, was a well-worth-the-wait exploration into the weird and wonderful emotions and experiences that only occur in those afterglow hours post-rave and pre sleeping in your own bed inevitably at some ridiculous time in the afternoon. Or is that just us?

Anyway, it was a wonderful release in its original form (and well received, too) with Greene confident in his new space and sound, a sound removed – but not completely cut off from – the early Night Slugs era, post dubstep material he released around the start of the 10s. 

But now, with musical pals such as Ciel, Nathan Micay, Lunice, Martyn Bootyspoon and UK producer Fort Romeau drenching Greene's tracks in their own colourful hues, 'Dawn Chorus' grows and shape-shifts both Greene and his songs once more. 

On the menu there's "club primetime house and techno, afterparty warehouse versions, IDM, shoegaze and fully deconstructed ambient" so there's plenty to tuck into, with @FortRomeau's remix of 'Night Service' among the highlights.

Premiere: Jacques Greene & Cadence Weapon 'Night Service' (Fort Romeau Remix)

Italian producer @chevelmusic has been rather busy of late, in case you didn't clock towards the end of the decade.

Between his 'In A Rush And Mercurial' LP back in 2018 or his Different Circles project 'Always Yours', he's been deep diving into his sound and deciphering how best to communicate sonically.

Ok, maybe not that deep, but you get our point. He's released several sprawling releases – no two the same – and here on new six-track EP 'Elvine Unlocked' he unlocks a new part of his sonic palette as he explores the powers of poppier pursuits.

Alongside the EP Chevel also released a comprehensive and unique sample pack, formed by almost 2GB of peculiar sounds, covering the 10 years of his  work and studio experimentations. Pick it up at store.chevel.co (where you can also pre-order the EP, fyi...)

When porcelain hits the floor it is seen as a promise for a brighter time. A time in that we calm down and reconnect to a higher grace in order to find contentment in the imperfections and impermanence of our human experience.

Kinsuby reassembles fragments of legendary music from Kraut to Disco. Just like Japanese artists recompose wonky pottery with gold. This can also be seen as a metaphor for life. Here our fractures are the actual gold veins and a portal to growth, creativity, knowledge and bliss.

On the first EP 3 Tracks are opening the portal to Kinsubys sonic experience:

„Purple Quatro“ starts the trip with melodic and spherical Synth-chords over a slow drum groove.

For „No Fool“ Kinsuby Teams up with vocalist Demetrius. The song picks up the melodic feeling of the first track. Trough the reversed guitar sounds and the melancholic vocals you are transported into a psychedelic space while the funky baseline serves as your safety line.
„DXSR“ reassembles you after this trip. You can still feel the melodic escapades of the first two tracks, but now they are more abstract while the rhythmic and relentless snare groove keeps driving you forward.

Swedish disco trio FRANGIE revisit last year’s ‘Rice & Beans’ with this exceptional version trove. Four of the five remixes are locally sourced and each one of them hits the dancefloor target.

Newcomer Storken, fresh from his Running Back debut, delivers full-on electro pop reverie in the form of his remix of ‘Opak Silence’. Reducing the epic 11 minute original into a Yazoo-level thrill-fest, it’s all about the energy, soul and lavish, vibrant synths.

Storken is joined by more exciting Swedish new-generation leaders; Tora Vinter adds to her growing body of work on BROR with an evocative, synth-lapped proggish take on ‘Rice & Beans’ while Parallax Deep’s infamous live vibe can be felt in every inch of her stripped-back twist of ‘Opak Intro’ with rolling, rippling undulating twists and stacks of minimal tension.

Deeper into the EP we glide… Rub N Tug’s Eric Duncan is the perfect choice to remix ‘Night Time’ as he tears it down and rebuilds it with an overwhelming disco fatness, additional live drums by Rafi Muhammad that pumps hypnotically and drops into those divine funk chords of the original.

The release is shut down by one of the biggest Swedish legends in our discourse: Joel Mull. Taking ‘We Vibe’ and turning it completely inside out with thundering kicks, dubby synth washes and microscopic details lurking in all the right spaces, Joel takes us so deep into his cave we’re almost out the other side.
